Setting the font in Microsoft Word

Formatted text is able to draw the reader’s attention to certain parts of the document and highlight important information. There are various ways to customize the font in Microsoft Word, including size, color, and inserting special characters. You can also adjust text alignment to change how it appears on the page. In this lesson, we will learn how to edit the font in Word – choose a typeface, as well as change its size and color.

Change the typeface

The default font for every new document is gauges. However, Microsoft Word comes with many other fonts for text and headings.

  1. Highlight the text you want to change.
  2. On the Advanced tab Home click on the dropdown in the field Font. The font family selection menu will appear.
  3. By hovering the mouse over different kinds of fonts, a preview of the specified font will be displayed in the selected part of the text. Select the typeface you want to use.
  4. The font in the document will change.

If you are creating a professional document or a document that contains many paragraphs, you will most likely need a font that is easy to read. Apart from gauges, standard easy-to-read fonts include Cambria, Times New Roman и Arial.

Changing the font size

  1. Highlight the text you want to change.
  2. Select the desired font size. There are several ways to do this.
    • Arrow in the Font Size box:

      On the Advanced tab Home click on the arrow in the field Font size. A list with recommended sizes will appear. By selecting different font sizes with the mouse, a preview will be displayed in the selected text fragment.

    • Font Size field:

      If you cannot find the required font size from the drop-down list, click in the field Font size and enter the desired font size manually. Then press Enter.

    • Increase and decrease font size:

      Push command increase or Decrease font sizeto resize.

  3. The font size in the document will change.

Changing the font color

  1. Highlight the text you want to change.
  2. On the Advanced tab Home click on the command arrow Text color. A drop-down menu will appear with possible text color options.
  3. Hover your mouse over the various color options. The text selection will show a preview of the font color.
  4. Select the desired font color. The color of the text in the document will change.

Text color options are not limited to those shown in the drop-down menu. Choose a team Other colors at the bottom of the list to open the dialog Colours. Select the desired color, then click OK.
