President of Serbia on vaccination against COVID-19: I am proud of what we have achieved
What is behind the success of Serbia, which, as President Vučić said, “has not received a single dose of the COVAX vaccine so far” (the program was created for fair access to affordable vaccines against COVID-19)? The country opted for vaccines from China and Our Country.
“Whether [vaccines] come from China, the US or the EU – we don’t care as long as they are safe and we get them as soon as possible,” Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic told the BBC.
President Aleksandar Vučić explained: – So far we have not received a single vaccine under the COVAX program. We got them as a result of our agreement with the Americans, with the Pfizer company. We also got them from China and Our Country. But we didn’t get them from the European Union (…) I am not criticizing anyone (…) But you had to take care of yourself. It’s not easy watching others take all of these vaccines and you have nothing to offer your people – explained the politician. – Our foreign policy has paid off; I think she was wise and I must say that I am proud of what we have achieved – he emphasized.
Three vaccines are currently available in Serbia: a preparation from Pfizer and BioNTech, Sputnik V and Sinovac from Chinese Sinopharm. On a special government website dedicated to vaccinations, Serbian residents are asked to indicate which preparation they prefer.
As PAP reported on February 5, “the vast majority is for the Chinese product”. In mid-January, a million doses of this preparation were delivered to Serbia, which enabled the launch of a massive vaccination campaign.
Successful vaccinations against COVID-19 in Serbia: personal friendships and diplomatic abilities
President Vučić explained the success of immunization in his country with personal friendships and diplomatic skills. He said he had a “good deal” with the Chinese pharmaceutical giant. “I wrote to (China’s leader) Xi Jinping in October and the price has been significantly lowered” (from PAP).
The politician points out that he hopes to receive most of the vaccines from the EU in due course. He announced that Serbia, for its part, was ready to donate “a large proportion” of its preparations to North Macedonia and possibly other Balkan countries in need. Although Serbia is formally seeking membership of the European Union, it is also strengthening its political, economic and military ties with its traditional ally, Our Country, as well as with China.
Hungary is the only country in the EU that has authorized the use of Chinese and vaccines. As noted by AFP, these preparations are viewed with suspicion in the West due to the lack of transparency of their authors and clinical data.
