Adding just 1,5 teaspoons of herbs and spices to meals can improve heart health. The researchers found that taking garlic supplements can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure as effectively as blood pressure medications, Healthline said.
The study participants who ate the most spices received more health benefits than those who ate the least.
For the study, 71 participants were selected with an increased risk of conditions such as hypertension or insulin resistance. Participants in the study received instructions from researchers to add 6,6, 3,3, and 0,5 grams of herbs and spices per day for four weeks. The doctors then used the blood samples to check for any changes in lipids, glucose, and insulin.
Although the results did not show any major changes in blood sugar or cholesterol levels among the participants, those who consumed 6,6 grams of the spice experienced an improvement in 24-hour blood pressure levels compared to those who ate the minimum amount of spices.
Studies have shown that small servings of leafy greens can improve heart health. Cinnamon has also been shown to have similar cardiovascular benefits.
