Def.: Secondary thrombocythemia is a symptom of other diseases or the result of known factors. The causes of secondary thrombocythemia include: inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis, polyarteritis nodosa, osteitis), neoplastic diseases, especially solid tumors (mainly lung and pancreas). Thrombocytopenia can also occur after removal of the spleen, in iron deficiency anemia, in chronic alcoholism.
Clin.: They are generally asymptomatic, with no thromboembolic events and no hemorrhagic diathesis.
But: Thrombocytopenia resolves after treatment of the underlying disease.
