Seawater accounts for 97 percent of the liquid water on the Earth’s surface, while freshwater accounts for less than 3 percent. Seawater contains a high concentration of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium cations as well as chloride, sulfate and carbonate anions, which are characterized by an intensely bitter or bitter-salty taste, making it unfit for drinking. Nevertheless, a liter of sea water can be drunk daily without harming the body.
