Sea buckthorn seedlings: when and how to plant

Sea buckthorn seedlings: when and how to plant

Sea buckthorn seedlings can be male and female. To obtain a harvest, trees of both sexes must be placed side by side. Depending on the planting season, tree care is different.

When planting sea buckthorn, the choice of seedlings

Sea buckthorn can be planted in spring and autumn. In spring, seedlings take root better, but require more care. In autumn, there is a danger of a sharp warming, when an immature plant can start growing, which, with the first frost, will lead to its death. Autumn planting has its advantages – a large selection of seedlings and their low price.

Sea buckthorn seedlings prefer sunny areas

You need to choose a material for planting taking into account the region. One of the conditions: the plant must be varietal. Landing a wild game by mistake can lead to disappointment. The disadvantages of wild sea buckthorn are as follows:

  • the berries are small and sour;
  • fruits disintegrate in the hands when harvesting;
  • removing a tree from the site, you have to fight for a long time with root shoots.

In addition to the wild, unisexual plants can also surprise you. Both male and female trees should be planted nearby.

You can distinguish between heterosexual plants when buds appear. Male kidneys are large, covered with 5-7 scales. The smaller buds of female plants cover 2-3 scales.

How to plant sea buckthorn seedlings

Since the tree does not like replanting, it must be immediately planted in a permanent place. Neutral soils in a sunny area are quite suitable for sea buckthorn. The planting soil consists of humus, compost or other organic fertilizer, as well as double superphosphate and wood ash.

For spring planting, the soil can be prepared in the fall. If this fails, mix the soil before planting. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Dig a hole 40-50 cm in diameter and 35-40 cm deep.
  2. Pour the prepared earth mixture on the bottom.
  3. Lower the seedling by spreading its roots.
  4. Cover the hole with soil so that the root collar is above the soil. This will happen after the soil subsides.
  5. Water the seedling and cover the tree trunk circle with earth.

Often it is not necessary to water the seedlings, but until they have taken root, you can feed them with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. You may need to protect your plants from the burning sun.

If you have to plant sea buckthorn in the fall, you need to carefully consider the quality of the root system. Weak plants will not be able to overwinter. For the winter, the seedling must be insulated with a covering material or improvised means, such as spruce branches or a blanket. You can not bring manure under the winter planting. It is necessary to strengthen the planting from the wind by tying a tree to a peg.

Seedlings must be chosen carefully, fearing diseased or non-varietal plants. Autumn and spring planting has advantages and disadvantages.
