Sea buckthorn (there is also the name sea buckthorn) is an unusual shrub, because it contains so many useful, health-promoting ingredients than any other. No wonder the s refer to it as the “gold of Siberia”. For medicinal purposes, mainly fruits are used, but also seeds, bark and leaves. The fruit is made into jams, preserves and juices. It is a little known plant, although it is often found in Poland.

What does sea buckthorn look like?

It is a highly branching shrub, although it can grow up to five meters. The easiest way to recognize it is by its fruit. They are tiny and oblong or spherical, orange in color, they are covered with stems in huge numbers. As they are high in acid, they taste very sour. Only after frosts do they acquire some sweetness.

The stems are covered with sharp spikes, and the leaves resemble willow leaves: they are silver green and narrow.

Wild sea buckthorn grows in Europe and Asia. It is also grown in gardens as an ornamental plant, because the fruit clusters are very decorative and remain for the winter, creating a colorful accent in the winter garden. It is also used for turfing slopes (which is why it can be seen near roads and roadways) and works perfectly as a hedge plant.

In Poland, sea buckthorn is partially protected. You cannot pick wild fruit that can be found on the Baltic Sea and in the Pieniny Mountains. If we want to make sea buckthorn juice or other preserves ourselves, we need to stock up on fruits from cultivated shrubs.

Sea buckthorn – properties

It was already known about its health benefits in antiquity. Greek name: hippophae (hippos – horse, phaes – shiny) testifies to the fact that in ancient times horses were fed with sea buckthorn leaves, and you must know that then the horse was as valuable as a luxury car today.

What bioactive substances are in the sea buckthorn? There are as many as 190 of them. These include:

  1. 14 vitamins (vitamins CA, E, F, K, P, B12),
  2. 11 micronutrients (including iron, calcium, potassium, aluminum, silicon),
  3. 18 amino acids
  4. 22 fatty acids
  5. antioxidants,
  6. 42 lipids.

Particularly noteworthy is the content of vitamin C in sea buckthorn. It has three times more than black currant! Only one fruit contains more vitamin C than sea buckthorn, and it is a wild rose. If we eat 100 g of sea buckthorn, we will provide ourselves with a daily dose of vitamin C with a great deal of interest.

So we should at least eat the fruit by handfuls, but the taste is a bit off-putting. The old truth is repeated here that what is healthy does not taste best (and what is unhealthy, such as sweets, tastes delicious). However, it is worth making sea buckthorn preserves with the addition of other fruits, such as rosehip or apples. You can also try the Herbal Monasterium sea buckthorn juice, which is drunk twice a day for 25 ml. You can also buy Bioherba Sea Buckthorn Oil at Medonet Market.

It is worth emphasizing that vitamin C from sea buckthorn is not broken down during roasting or cooking.
