Skin scrubbing is the name given to the process of applying a scrub to the face and body. And the benefits of this process are truly remarkable. Proper exfoliation leaves skin smooth, even, and more receptive to further care.
What is scrubbing
Thanks to deep cleansing, the skin seems to glow from the inside.
Scrubbing is the process of exfoliating (exfoliating) the skin of the face or body. As a result, there is a release from keratinized cells that have accumulated on the surface of the epidermis. When there are too many of them, the skin becomes dull, lifeless, uneven. Therefore, once or a couple of times a week, “general cleaning” in the form of scrubbing will not hurt.
What are the benefits of exfoliating your skin?
The effect is noticeable immediately after the procedure:
even tone;
softness and smoothness of the skin to the touch;
nice healthy color.
Plus a pleasant feeling of freshness and cheerfulness.
Scrubbing increases the effectiveness of subsequent care at times. And this, you see, is an important point.
When and who needs scrubs
Everyone – except for people with very dry and sensitive skin. Exfoliation is not considered a mandatory skin care procedure, but it will only benefit in the following cases:
as part of a weekly intensive skin cleansing (1-2 times a week);
before using self-tanners and a day or two before hair removal;
in the righteous fight against orange peel – the beauty of the scrub is that we begin to vigorously massage the skin, and this warms it up perfectly and enhances lymphatic drainage.
When Not to Use Scrubs
There are few contraindications for the scrub procedure:
individual intolerance to one or another component;
the presence of wounds on the skin;
active inflammatory process – scrubbing can contribute to the spread of infection, provoking additional inflammation;
skin diseases in the acute stage.
How often can you exfoliate your skin
With all the advantages of scrubbing, it is important to know when to stop. Horny skin particles are one of the components of its protective barrier. If removed too frequently and violently, the skin can become sensitive and irritated. Therefore, we emphasize – use the scrub no more than 1-2 times a week. In cases of hyperkeratosis, for example, with very oily skin, you can use a scrub up to 3 times a week (unless, of course, you use 3-in-1 products for daily care).
Scrubbing is carried out no more than 1-2 times a week. As a rule, the manufacturer places recommendations for use on the packaging and it is reasonable to adhere to them.
Types of scrubs by texture
Scrubs can vary in texture.
Despite the fact that all scrubs are responsible for mechanical exfoliation, they can differ quite a lot both in the type of abrasive particles (we will talk about them a little later) and in texture. Let’s talk more about the classification of scrubs according to this characteristic.
Oil
The composition focuses on the content of oils, so such products simultaneously with exfoliation nourish the skin. A great option for very dry skin that needs extra nourishment.
Cream
dry
Dry scrubs perfectly exfoliate and polish the skin, but they usually act more aggressively. A dry scrub is a rather powerful shake for the skin, usually exfoliation with its help becomes one of the stages of complex care with wrapping or other procedures.
Scrub soap
A great option for those who are in a hurry all the time and are not ready to spend a lot of time on beauty rituals. Scrub soap is often found in men’s care lines, but recently many women have also fallen in love with them for their invigorating and refreshing effect. However, with dry and sensitive skin, such products are still better not to choose. Read more about men’s face scrubs here.
Types of scrubs by particle type
Now let’s talk about another characteristic of scrubbing agents. On the label of any scrub, you can read the list of components that make up the composition. Among them, two types of exfoliating particles stand out: natural and synthetic.
Natural
This type includes natural abrasives: sugar crystals, particles of ground fruits and berries, crushed nut shells, powder from some volcanic rocks, diatomaceous earth. It is these natural exfoliants that are used in the scrubs listed below.
Synthetic
Many people value naturalness in cosmetics. However, synthetic abrasives have their indisputable advantages. More often they are aimed at sensitive skin, because they act effectively, but extremely delicately.

How to exfoliate your skin at home
Before using the scrub, be sure to take a shower and apply the product to damp skin.
Any scrubs are recommended to be used on wet skin after cleansing. The frequency of use depends on the type of product and the sensitivity of your skin. The main thing is not to overdo it.
Face
Wash off with your usual cleanser.
Apply a scrub (the amount of product should not exceed the size of a pea).
Spread the scrub over the surface of the skin with gentle massaging movements.
Wash off with warm water.
Apply a moisturizing or nourishing cream or mask (moisturizing, nourishing, regenerating).
Body
Scrubbing is usually carried out during water procedures. Everything is simple here.
Cleanse your skin with shower gel.
Apply a scrub to the skin and massage over the skin.
Rinse off.
After showering, apply moisturizing milk or cream.
For greater effect, you can use a special washcloth, just do not overdo it.
If you have not used a scrub yet, then it is better to start the procedure once a week to see what the reaction will be. Ideally, you should notice that the skin becomes smoother and more beautiful over and over again. You can also use different products with different exfoliating particles. The main guideline is a comfortable feeling and a pleasing result.
How is the scrub procedure performed in the salon
Body peeling in the salon is a pleasant procedure that is often included in complex SPA programs.
Skin scrubbing is included in the spa programs of many beauty salons. This procedure is very pleasant and comfortable, if there is no individual intolerance to the components of the scrub. What is waiting for you?
Before the procedure, you will be asked to take a shower. After that, they will rub the body with a scrub, the composition of which is often offered to be chosen independently, based on personal preferences. The specialist will apply the scrub to the body with energetic massage movements, without missing a single area. Then the composition is washed off and proceed to the next procedure.
Unlike home scrubbing, salon scrubbing implies a professional level. Beauticians and masseurs work, and you just have to relax and enjoy the process.
