Hepatocellular carcinoma is a disease in which screening tests, i.e. research aimed at detecting an existing disease at an early stage, are of great practical importance. This is for a number of reasons. First, the prognosis of patients who are diagnosed early is much better compared to those who have already spread the cancer. Secondly, it was possible to precisely define the groups of increased risk of developing this cancer. Finally, we have effective, practically available and inexpensive methods of detecting this cancer. These are the abdominal ultrasound (optimally with vascular contrast) and the determination of the tumor marker concentration, which in this case is AFP (alpha-fetoprotein). Both diagnostic methods complement each other. Performed in people at risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma every 6-12 months, they significantly increase the frequency of cancer detection at an early stage of its development and have a positive effect on the fate of patients. Experience in interpreting the results of the performed tests requires that they be assessed by a physician in the context of the collected medical history and physical examination.
