Scopolan – composition, action, dosage. How to use Scopolan?

Scopolan is a drug containing hyoscine butylbromide, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, biliary tract and genitourinary system. Scopolan is a drug available in the form of tablets and suppositories. The mechanism of action and dosing of Scopolan tablets will be presented below.

Scopolan – what is this drug?

Scopolan is a drug that contains hyoscine butylbromide, which removes contractile states of smooth muscles in the abdominal cavity. Scopolan exerts a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, bile ducts and the genitourinary system. The peripheral anticholinergic (cholinolytic) effect is due to the blocking of the ganglia within the internal organs as well as an antimuscarinic effect.

Scopolan is used in the case of:

  1. pain in spasms of the digestive tract (e.g. stomach cramps, intestinal colic, irritable bowel syndrome),
  2. pain in the biliary tract (biliary colic),
  3. Pain in the genitourinary system (e.g. renal colic, spasms associated with ureterolithiasis, dysmenorrhea.

Scopolan – dosage

The preparation is in the form of coated tablets. It is intended for oral use. Do not exceed the recommended doses, because it will not increase the effectiveness of the drug, and may be harmful to health and life.

Adults and children after the age of 12: 1-2 tablets 3-5 times a day; children 6–12. years of age: 1 tablet 2 times a day. The use of the preparation in children under 6 years of age is contraindicated.

Scopolan – contraindications and precautions

Do not use Scopolan if you are allergic to tropane alkaloids and their derivatives, narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, constipation, paralytic intestinal obstruction, stricture of the esophagus, or pylorus of the stomach, narrowing of the bladder neck, abnormal heart rhythm (tachycardia ), muscle fatigue (myasthenia gravis), pathological enlargement of the large intestine (megacolon). It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Do not use in children under 6 years of age.

Remember!

Scopolan should be taken only temporarily in spasms of the digestive tract of the bile ducts and the genitourinary system.

Scopolan should be used with caution in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, ulcerative enteritis, ischemic heart disease, stenosis of the mitral orifice and in the elderly.

In the event of any visual acuity disturbances or pain in the eyeball caused by an increase in intraocular pressure, you should stop taking Scopolan. Due to the possibility of reducing sweat secretion, Scopolan should be used with caution in people with fever.

People with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, galactose intolerance, the lack of lactase or glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take Scopolan.

Scopolan – interactions with other drugs

Tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazine derivative neuroleptics, clozapine and olanzapine, MAO inhibitors, XNUMXst generation antihistamines, amantadine, pethidine and disopyramide, and other anticholinergic drugs (e.g. tiotropium, ipratropium, atrominolytic compounds similar to atcylobiniosis) may increase and related side effects.

Dopaminergic antagonists such as metoclopramide may reduce the gastrointestinal effects of the drug. The medicinal product may increase beta-adrenergic induced tachycardia.

Scopolan – side effects

Scopolan can cause some side effects. When using Scopolan, remember to take only the doses prescribed by your doctor, or according to the recommendations contained in the leaflet.

During the use of Scopolan, the following may appear:

  1. skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: erythema, skin burning, itching, rash, urticaria, edema – uncommon,
  2. gastrointestinal disorders: dry mouth, constipation – uncommon,
  3. heart disorders: tachycardia (increased heart rate) – uncommon
  4. vascular disorders: hypotension (hypotension) – uncommon,
  5. disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract: anuria (urinary retention) – rarely,
  6. eye disorders: visual disturbances – rare,
  7. immune system disorders: anaphylactic (allergic) reactions, anaphylactic shock (sudden and severe allergic reaction characterized by difficulty breathing, a significant drop in blood pressure, swelling, rash) – frequency unknown.
