Scooters out of law. “Not a day goes by without us putting someone back together after an accident”

“Today, we were folding the shattered jaw of a 19-year-old who fell over on a scooter for nearly seven hours,” wrote Marcin Socha, an oral surgeon from a Warsaw hospital, on his profile. The boom on scooters continues, and the doctors in HEDs have their hands full. Not a day goes by without a patient showing up in the emergency room after an accident on a scooter.

«Which of the gentlemen after the scooter accident?»

Doctor Marcin Socha did not expect that the short post he would publish on Facebook would become a viral. So far, over 1000 people have made it available. That’s a lot considering that Socha is not a celebrity, actor or singer, but a doctor. A doctor who “folds” people riding scooters after accidents.

«Almost every day someone breaks their facial bones on a scooter in Warsaw». Sounds unbelievable, but it is.

– I wrote the post a bit in desperation, when I left a few hours of surgery with a partially numb hand, broken that this was another such case. There is no end to this madness in sight. I wrote it as a warning – says Marcin Socha in an interview with MedTvoiLokony.

The operation of the 19-year-old, who fell on a scooter, lasted nearly 7 hours. At the same time, another man from a similar accident came to the Emergency Department. The doctors diagnosed him with a fracture of the eye socket.

– After all, I went to the operating room to ask the boy I operated on if I could quote his story on Facebook and talk about his case. I entered the room and asked: “which of the gentlemen is after the accident on the scooter?” Two raised their hands. Two major operations a day due to a scooter accident. And this was not an individual case. Almost every day we have people after such events at the SOR. At weekends, it even happens that there are 3-4 such cases a day – says Socha.

The boy operated by Dr. Socha was driving 25 km / h. Together with a friend, they left the club, rented scooters nearby and wanted to return home on them. They couldn’t travel far. One of them lost his balance at some point, fell over and hit the pavement with his face. He was very lucky to be able to put it together.

After the party, go home on a scooter

Socha also cites another accident with much more serious consequences. A patient from Switzerland came to the operating table. He was returning from a party on a scooter and rubbing himself to death.

– He had a fracture of the base of the skull, a fractured temporal bone, a temporal lobe hematoma, a broken jaw, an eye socket, a C6 spine, a huge skin abrasion and a torn corner of his mouth. A terrible injury after a fall from an electric scooter to the face. In this case, it could even result in death.

Electric scooter users are unaware of the danger. In Warsaw, in front of each building, we can see a few parked scooters, and there is not a day without a person riding such a vehicle on the way to or from work. They are also often used as a cheap means of transport home from an event. Then, people get on scooters after drinking alcohol and pose a threat not only to themselves, but also to other users of sidewalks, bicycle paths and streets. Because you can go anywhere with the scooter. It is not known how to treat her.

– We have a real scooter madness in Warsaw. People must be made aware that speeding up to 25 km / h is not safe. I hope that our authorities will settle matters related to scooters and it will be safer on the streets and sidewalks – adds Socha.
