In Poland, bars and restaurants remain closed, although the government is systematically loosening the restrictions. This is a deliberate decision, according to data published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. It is because in bars that the sanitary regime is not respected most often.

Coronavirus: the restrictions in bars are not respected

Last year, a study was conducted in Scotland on social behavior in local bars. After the government approved the opening of venues in the summer, the Scots stopped adhering to rules designed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs shows that alcohol consumption and the relaxed atmosphere in pubs promote dangerous behavior.

In Scotland, bars reopened in July 2020. The government introduced clear rules on how premises should adapt to the situation – social distance was to be at least one meter, customers were to be seated and staff were required to cover their mouths and nose.

In practice, it turned out that most of the guidelines could not be applied. Cramped spaces, such as the entrance to the premises or the corridor leading to the toilet, were places where people gathered without restriction. What’s more, customers were eager to get to know people outside their “bubble”, that is, the group of people with whom they had social contacts most often. There were also loud talking, singing, hugging and kissing on the cheek. All of these behaviors are conducive to the transmission of COVID-19.

COVID-19 – the most dangerous droplet route

On February 12, the Polish government reopened the ski slopes and hotels. A huge number of Poles went to Zakopane to go skiing, but also to walk around Krupówki. Both on Friday and Saturday evening, the Zakopane promenade was full of people under the influence of alcohol. People danced and sang in Krupówki, and the sanitary regime was not respected. The police dispersed the crowds.

The government’s appeals for reason changed little in this regard. After months of restrictions, Poles were not able to suppress their joy. In turn, the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, warns that the increase in the number of infections after the weekend in Krupówki will mean the need to impose further restrictions.

COVID-19 is transmitted primarily by droplets. Covering the mouth and nose is to prevent the spread of aerosols containing pathogenic particles. The virus can be passed on to another person by speaking out loud, kissing, and even just breathing.
