Drinking filtered coffee is healthier than not drinking at all, but unfiltered coffee can be dangerous, according to researchers from the University of Gothenburg. This conclusion became possible thanks to the statistical analysis of the data set on more than half a million people.
The experiment, which surveyed 508 people aged 747 to 20, lasted 79 years. During this time, 20 46 people died (including 461 12 – from cardiovascular diseases, about half of them from a heart attack).
The study participants, in addition to the standard questionnaire (height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol level, bad habits, physical activity, education), answered questions about how coffee is made and how much they drink.
Those who drank coffee using a filter had a 15% lower risk of death (12% for men and 20% for women) than those who did not drink coffee.
This could be because the drink is rich in antioxidants, including polyphenols, scientists speculated. Also, coffee consumption is also associated with a lower risk of diabetes, a risk factor for heart disease.
How much coffee is healthy
The lowest mortality rate was among consumers of 1-4 cups of filtered coffee per day.
What is the danger of unfiltered coffee?
The increased mortality from coronary heart disease with unfiltered drink addiction is partly due to its association with cholesterol levels in the body, the authors write.
A serving of unfiltered coffee contains about 30 times the concentration of substances that increase lipid levels compared to filtered coffee. However, the porosity of the filter and the particle size of the ground roasted coffee are the determining factors for the cafestol content of the filtered coffee.
How to make coffee with a filter bag
- Spread the bag to its full width, secure it to the cup. The bag usually has a handle or small protrusion that can be used to hook the filter bag onto the cup,
- Pour hot water into the coffee filter bag with a thin stream.
- Filled with hot water, the coffee must be left for 1-2 minutes.
- Then take out the bag of coffee grounds.
- The package is no longer needed and can be thrown away.
Thus, the consumption of filtered coffee through a paper filter is associated with less mortality among adherents of this method of preparation than among drinkers of unfiltered coffee or those who do not drink coffee at all.
