Scientists report how many eggs you can eat a day and how they affect our health

Only once, maybe two a week, every other day, every day, in general – over the years of answering the question of how many eggs a day can be eaten, at least a dozen have appeared. Currently, scientists are increasingly betting on one of them. And they argue – such consumption of eggs will significantly affect the functioning of one of the body’s systems. This information is supported by scientific research.

  1. Eggs contain a lot of cholesterol, but also various nutrients that positively affect the cardiovascular system
  2. Studies in China show that eating a moderate amount of eggs reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke
  3. Interestingly, those who ate fewer eggs had lower blood levels of the beneficial compounds and higher levels of those that harm their arteries

How many eggs can you eat in one day?

Moderate consumption of eggs causes an increase in the concentration of many substances that protect the circulatory system in the blood, and a decrease in unfavorable ones, scientists from China report. For healthy people, researchers recommend one egg a day.

Although eggs contain a lot of cholesterol, they are also rich in various nutrients, researchers from the University of Beijing reminded. They note that previous studies have produced mixed results when it comes to the influence of eggs on the circulatory system. However, for example, a large Chinese study involving as many as half a million adult volunteers, published in 2018, indicated that people who eat an average of one egg a day have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke than people who eat eggs less frequently.

Eggs and the circulatory system

To better understand these relationships, the Beijing team looked at how egg consumption affects blood levels of various cardiovascular substances.

«Only a few studies have looked at the role of plasma cholesterol metabolism in the correlations between egg consumption and cardiovascular risk. We wanted to fill this gap »says Lang Pan from Peking University.

Scientists analyzed the concentration of 225 metabolites in the blood of almost 5 thousand. people, of which 3,5 thous. had cardiovascular problems. As it turned out, those who ate fewer eggs had lower levels of the beneficial compounds in their blood and higher levels of those that harm their arteries.

Egg lovers, for example, had a higher concentration of the beneficial lipoprotein (HDL), which captures cholesterol from blood vessels.

«Our results provide a possible explanation why moderate egg consumption may help protect against heart disease. Further studies are needed to check the cause-effect relationships in the action of lipids and metabolites on the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of cardiovascular diseases »- claims prof. Canqing Yu, also from Peking University.

Researchers point out that, for example, Chinese recommendations say eating one egg a day, but the average consumption is lower.

L-arginine is an amino acid that supports the functioning of the circulatory system by helping to seal the blood vessels. A dietary supplement containing this important ingredient can be found in Medonet Market.
