Scientists have proven the link between diet and slowing down aging

scientists conducted an experiment on rats and found that diet can slow down aging by starting the process of cleansing damaged mitochondria in the body. What else you need to know about the study

What’s going on

  • Scientists from Moscow State University and Voronezh State University in the course of an experiment on rats found out that if you eat little and diet, you can slow down aging.
  • The deterioration of health and aging of the body occurs due to disruption of the mitochondria – organelles that provide cells with energy. With age, there are more and more violations, and the cells do not have time to eliminate them. Therefore, scientists decided to slow down the accumulation of “breakdowns” in mitochondria, thereby delaying aging.
  • Old rats were divided into two groups. The diet of the first was limited, the second was fed as usual. After two months, the researchers measured the number of mitochondria with any abnormalities in both groups. It turned out that in the first group of rats that were on a diet, there were fewer damaged mitochondria, and the aging process in the brain and kidneys slowed down.
  • Thus, a diet and a decrease in the amount of food consumed starts the process of cleansing cells from damaged particles, improves the condition of the body and slows down aging.

What does it mean

Scientists from different countries are working to solve the problem of aging. For example, in Japan in January 2022, a vaccine was successfully tested on mice that prevents aging. The peptides underlying the vaccine program the immune system to destroy cells that synthesize the GPNMB protein in the genes of aging cells.

In April 2022, British scientists proposed a way to reprogram old skin cells into young ones. However, this method is not fully understood and may even cause cancer.

In December 2021, scientists from China found that the substance procyanidin C1 (PCC1) at a low concentration prevents inflammation in aging cells, at a high concentration it kills aging cells without damaging young ones. PCC1 is found in grape seeds.
