Scientists are straightforward: these mushrooms can relieve symptoms of depression

According to scientists, mushrooms can have a positive effect on mental health. The antioxidants they contain help prevent mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. They can also alleviate their symptoms.

  1. Mushrooms contain many compounds that can be useful in fighting disease. Therefore, researchers around the world are looking for potential in them to develop new drugs
  2. Such compounds include antioxidants that have the ability to fight free radicals – toxic byproducts of metabolism that increase the risk of many diseases
  3. Contained in mushrooms, mainly in the boletus, L-ergothioneine may alleviate symptoms of depression and reduce the risk of developing this disease

The excess of free radicals circulating in the body can cause the so-called Oxidative stress. There is a disturbed balance between the by-products of metabolic changes, i.e. free radicals, and the ability to remove them from the body. Free radicals are destructive to the body as they damage healthy tissue. Thus, oxidative stress may increase the risk of many diseases, including atherosclerosis, heart attacks, Parkinson’s disease, as well as mental illness including depression. These antioxidants can help. One of the strongest is L-ergothionein, which is a component of mushrooms, and porcini mushrooms have the most. – informs Gazeta Wyborcza.

Mushrooms for depression? Research by American scientists

American scientists from Penn State College of Medicine conducted a study that was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. In their opinion mushrooms contain numerous bioactive compounds that may be associated with anxiety reduction, including vitamin B12, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory substances.

They hypothesized that eating mushrooms was associated with a lower risk of depression. They analyzed the data collected from over 24 American adults in 2005-2016. The average age of the respondents was approx. 45 years. Studies have shown that people who consumed mushrooms have a decreased incidence of depression. The researchers explained this by the presence of L-ergothionein in mushrooms.

The Beneficial Effects Of Eating Mushrooms

The conclusions of American scientists are also confirmed by Dr. n. Farm, quoted by Gazeta Wyborcza. Ewa Zapora from the Institute of Forest Sciences of the Białystok University of Technology, who, inter alia, studies the composition and properties of mushrooms.

– Research conducted several years ago showed that L-ergothioneine relieves symptoms of depression. The greatest amount of this compound is in boletus – 528 mg per kilogram. In oyster mushroom already less – 118 mg – explains Dr. Ewa Zapora to Gazeta Wyborcza. And he adds: – L-ergothionein from mushrooms is easily digestible for us, the body uses it within an hour of eating mushrooms.

However, not only porcini mushrooms are beneficial for mental health. The potassium present in mushrooms is also important – it is present, among others, in in mushrooms and oyster mushrooms, i.e. mushrooms available every day in almost every store. Adequate potassium levels in the body can lower the risk of anxiety, which is one of the symptoms of depression. Vitamin B12, also found in mushrooms, has similar properties.
