This year’s heat has taken its toll on everyone. We are trying different ways to survive them. One of them is the public fountain. However, the Chief Sanitary Inspector warns against them, because it is a closed water cycle and may harm our health more than help.
- The water in the fountains is not suitable for bathing or drinking
- It can cause various ailments, including respiratory diseases and streptococcal infections
- GIS warns against using fountains as part of a holiday campaign aimed at increasing the safety of Poles
- More current information can be found on the Onet homepage.
Sanepid warns
Fountains can be found in virtually every Polish city. As soon as it gets warm, you can notice crowds of playing children or adults, who stand in such a way that the stream of gushing cool water will get them wet. It is also quite not uncommon to see the children eagerly enter the fountain. Meanwhile, it is a health error that can have serious consequences.
Water circulates in a closed circuit in fountains, so it is not suitable for bathing or drinking. The point is that there may be pathogenic microorganisms (such as fungi or bacteria) in the water. They can easily enter the mouth and cause various types of infections, as well as irritate the skin.
What microorganisms can be found in the water?
Water remaining in an open-access tank may be contaminated with faeces with microorganisms present in animal faeces. These include: E. coli, enterococci. There may also be viruses (enteroviruses, noroviruses) and parasitic protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) in the water.
See if you can have parasites. Perform a mail order parasite test available at Medonet Market without leaving your home.
Closed water promotes infection
Water in fountains can cause respiratory diseases, conjunctivitis, staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, skin diseases, and urinary tract and bladder infections.
