From May 2022, patients who decide to go to a sanatorium have to take into account higher expenses than before. However, this is not the only change related to treatment in a spa facility. The Ministry of Health is preparing more. Will they be beneficial for patients?
- A trip to a sanatorium is a great way for many people to strengthen the body and recover after hospital treatment
- A referral for spa treatment is issued by a health insurance doctor, taking into account the patient’s current health condition, possible contraindications and the impact of such treatment on the health condition.
- The Ministry of Health is planning changes to the regulations on stays in sanatoriums. Among other things, number of treatments available
- More information can be found on the TvoiLokony home page
A sanatorium is a place where we can recover from a long and exhausting illness, strengthen our immunity and take advantage of medical treatments. Usually it is located in an attractive town, the natural and spa values of which are used as an additional element of convalescence. However, it is not always a place available to everyone who dreams of resting under the care of professionals. To get to the sanatorium, certain requirements must be met.

Who is the sanatorium for?
Spa treatment under the National Health Fund is treated as an extension of inpatient or outpatient treatment. As the National Health Fund reminds: “Only patients fit enough to travel to the spa, who are independent, able to self-service and benefit from medical treatments, can be referred to the spa treatment”.
The Fund recommends that adults stay in a sanatorium no more than once every 18 months. And what natural resources and treatments can you take advantage of in such a place? Mineral waters, peloid, climatotherapeutic stimuli, hydrotherapy, physical therapy, kinesiotherapy — these are just some of the health attractions of the health resort. Depending on the choice of a specific facility, you can also use free of charge: therapeutic baths and exercises in swimming pools, drinking cures and inhalations, showers, Scottish douches, water massages, wraps and wraps, heat therapy, light therapy, electrotherapy, ultrasounds, magnetotherapy, laser therapy, cryotherapy, therapeutic massage, individual and collective gymnastics.
- For home massage, the TM-GUN STRONG full body pistol massager will be useful, which is a good complement to physiotherapy, but can also be used prophylactically
What costs do you have to pay?
Each patient staying in the spa sanatorium bears the cost of accommodation and meals. The amount of the fee for one day of patient’s stay for stays of 21 and 28 days depends on the standard of the room. This amount is strictly defined by the Minister of Health. The rates have risen since May.
According to the regulation of April 4, 2022, for a single room with full sanitary facilities, we will pay PLN 32,6 (season from October 1 to April 30) or PLN 40,9 (season from May 1 to September 30). A single room without a bathroom costs a bit cheaper, but still more expensive than a double room with a bathroom. The cheapest possible option is a place in a dormitory room without sanitary facilities. It costs PLN 10,6 in the fall and winter season, and PLN 11,9 in the spring and summer season.

Sanatorium in the mining excavation: Wieliczka
The Ministry of Health has announced changes to the regulations on sanatoriums. After their introduction, the patient, not the doctor, will decide which sanatorium he will go to. You will still need a referral, but you will not have to deliver it to the National Health Fund. There will also be a wider choice of treatments. Instead of three, you will be able to use five free treatments a day. The issue of accommodation and board fees remains unchanged.
