Sambuca is an Italian alcoholic liqueur drink with a distinct licorice flavor, which is often used in cocktails, but not less often as a digestif. Sambuca gained particular popularity after the Second World War.

Sambuca is prepared by mixing alcohol with sugar syrup and essential oils. The main flavoring agent in the liqueur is anise essential oil, which gives the drink a special, delicate aroma of licorice. Other additives include star anise or elderberry essential oil. The resulting liquor is generally stringy and clear, but you can buy blue and black, as well as red and green sambuca. The bright color of the drink in these cases is due only to food dyes, and not to the interaction of any substances. The strength of the liquor is 42%.

Other famous liquor-flavored alcoholic beverages are Greek ouzo, Turkish rakia, French pastis.

Sambuca can be consumed in a variety of ways and in various combinations. As a digestive – a drink that is drunk at the end of a meal – liqueur is served in glasses and drunk in one gulp, like a shot drink, or poured into a glass or glass and sipped a little. Those who like to watch the drink slowly turn milky white pour it into a glass filled with cubes or crushed ice. The fog that appears in the glass is called the “ouzo effect”, it is explained by a chemical reaction that leads to the formation of a microemulsion when essential oils are mixed with water. Often sambuca is set on fire – this enhances the aroma, but be sure to extinguish it before drinking. Ignition leads to burnout of alcohol vapors, such a drink looks beautiful on photo and video materials. Choose thick glass dishes for burning cocktails, otherwise the dishes may burst.

In Italy, liqueurs are often drunk after a cup of strong coffee, such drinks are called “coffee killer” (ammazzacaffé). It is believed that so, you can clear your receptors of the strong aroma and taste of this popular drink. Sambuca is often the killer. Another way to drink liqueurs, including sambuca, in Italy is called “corrected coffee” (Caffe Corretto). It consists in the fact that a little strong alcohol is poured into a hot drink.

The traditional Italian drink “sambuca with flies” (con la moska) is a glass of liquor in which three roasted coffee beans float. Grains symbolize prosperity, health and happiness
