Could the fear of the coronavirus be an explanation for patients who avoid visits to hospitals and clinics? Especially when the patient needs immediate medical attention or should not stop treatment? Not! A team of neurologists from Lublin, led by prof. Konrad Rejdak, president-elect of the Polish Neurological Society, got involved in a special social campaign “Don’t wait at home”.
The fear of SARS-CoV-2 is more dangerous to health and life than we think
The coronavirus epidemic is a new and difficult experience, especially for patients who are afraid of using medical assistance in hospitals, clinics or emergency departments. Meanwhile, the fear of SARS-CoV-2 may turn out to be more dangerous to health and life than we think. It very often leads to wrong decisions – paralyzes instead of motivating to act, e.g. in a situation of an immediate threat to life, which is a stroke.
«Every six minutes someone in Poland suffers a stroke. Today too. Also take action during an epidemic. The hospital is safe for all patients. If we are to save your health, you must help us »- says Professor Konrad Rejdak, president elect of the Polish Neurological Society and head of the Department and Clinic of Neurology at the Medical University of Lublin, in the #nieczekajwdomu campaign spot.
Safe hospital for all patients. Don’t wait at home when you need help!
One of the myths about strokes is that it only affects the elderly. However, it can happen to any of us and in any situation. It is important to know the basic symptoms of a stroke in order to react in time. “A stroke is more dangerous than a virus, especially one that is not recognized in time,” concludes Professor Rejdak.
Professor Rejdak’s team from the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Lublin was involved in the action, for which the priority during the pandemic is to provide patients with reliable information that the hospital is also a safe place for them today, and doctors are ready to help. Most importantly, patients should not wait at home for the coronavirus threat to pass when they need help. Remember that it is the quick reaction of the patient or their relatives that determines whether the stroke will be dangerous for you.
- In Poland, about 80-90 thousand people suffer from a stroke every year. people, and about 30 thousand. of them dies.
- 30 percent people die of a stroke within the first month of falling ill.
- 20 percent patients who experience the acute phase of stroke require constant care, and 30 percent. assistance in some activities of everyday life.
