Runny nose itself can be a very bothersome and irritating ailment, so we want to get rid of it as soon as possible, often using a wide range of medications. The most common cause of a runny nose is the common cold, while in the case of pregnancy, especially in its second half, another reason is possible – hormonal rhinitis.
During pregnancy, the body produces increased amounts of estrogen and progesterone, which results in the mucosa swelling. The result is a stuffy nose, runny nose and even nosebleeds. A visit to the doctor is recommended if the runny nose is very strong; hormonal rhinitis should resolve spontaneously shortly after delivery. Whatever the cause, a runny nose alone poses no threat to pregnancy. However, it should be remembered that a runny nose is often associated with a viral infection, which can already be dangerous – therefore, this symptom should not be underestimated, if it does not disappear on its own after a few days.
How to safely treat a runny nose in pregnancy?
The most important thing to remember is that you must not take any medications during pregnancy without consulting your doctor.
Each case is different, and while there are drugs that are generally recognized as safe for pregnancy, in some situations they can also be harmful. Special restrictions on taking medications are imposed in the first trimester of pregnancy; some medications will no longer be banned in the later trimesters.
In case of allergic rhinitis the most commonly used drugs are antihistamines. If the expectant mother has previously been under the care of an allergist and is taking the medications prescribed by him, she should visit him again, because it may be necessary to change the medicine to a safer one for the child.

How to overcome a runny nose in pregnancy with home remedies?
Since the medications usually used are out of the question, home remedies can be tried to overcome a runny nose if it is not too bothersome and does not require a visit to the doctor. First of all, you should take care of your surroundings. It is worth considering buying an air humidifier, as it is more difficult to get rid of a runny nose in dry air that irritates the mucosa. You should also take care of replenishing fluids; it is recommended to drink up to three liters a day. Warm water or tea with lemon and honey is a common suggestion, and it can also help fight a mild fever.
Onion and garlic syrup is also a safe measure, and it is always a good idea to eat fruit with a high content of vitamin C. Inhalation of sea salt or saline solutions may also help to clear the mucosa. Prophylactically and as an adjunct during treatment, you can use the Ecological Tea for Pregnant Women, which contains, among others, blackcurrant leaves and wild rose, which have a beneficial effect on immunity.
However, remember that it is always safest to ask about the effectiveness of your doctor first.
