Newborn babies experience a runny nose much more severely than an adult. This is understandable: a helpless baby cannot cope with an illness on its own. And here the main task of the mother is to start treatment as soon as possible. Moreover, the time-tested ways of dealing with a cold are not so few.

A runny nose is caused by viruses that spread through the air and enter the human body by inhalation-exhalation and contact with a sick person – a carrier of ARVI. It is viruses that cause inflammation and swelling of the baby’s mucous membrane, which causes nasal congestion and snot. And in this situation, it is important to start treating the child on time in order to prevent complications from manifesting. After all, if you do not take action, the inflammation will go down lower, and then the baby may start coughing or inflammation of the middle ear – otitis media.

In the fight against a runny nose, consistency is important – only regular procedures will give the desired result

In addition, it is necessary to find out the cause of the common cold. Perhaps the baby has caught a cold, overheated, got infected from someone, or has an allergy. In this case, the methods of treatment may differ.

When treating a common cold, try to give preference to natural remedies, such as:

  • salt
  • essential oils of eucalyptus, tea tree, spruce, pine, fir
  • chamomile and calendula flowers

Their effectiveness is no lower than that of pharmaceuticals, but they do not cause side effects.

Use medicines only after consulting a pediatrician.

As for first aid, first you need to make it easier for the child to breathe. To do this, put the baby on a side and free his nose from mucus. Thin cotton swabs can be used for this purpose. If the runny nose is severe, try sucking off the mucus with a soft syringe or syringe.

To stop a runny nose, put one drop of saline solution into each nostril of your baby. Just keep in mind that saline drops and discharge from the nose strongly irritate the delicate baby skin, so often lubricate the area around the baby’s nose with baby cream or oil.

Breast milk is ideal for treating a cold. If you are breastfeeding, it is enough to instill a drop of breast milk into each nostril of the baby several times a day.

Drops from calendula and St. John’s wort help to cope well with a cold. To prepare them, pour one teaspoon of crushed plant flowers into a thick-walled cup. Pour a glass of boiling water over them and let it brew for 15–20 minutes. Then strain the infusion and cool. Instill 1-2 drops of the product in each nostril. St. John’s wort and calendula have a beneficial effect on the well-being of the child, they perfectly disinfect the nasal cavity and relieve swelling.

With a cold, inhalations with eucalyptus, mint, chamomile, pine, fir are useful. Inhalation can be replaced with an aromatherapy session. For him, it is enough to put an aroma lamp in the room and add a few drops of essential oil to it.

Rinse your baby’s nose regularly with a saline solution, and then instill drops of St. John’s wort and calendula or any other herbal preparation.
