Rum cocktails: how to make and drink? Video
Made from fermented sugarcane juice, the aromatic strong rum has been popular since the mid-XNUMXth century. This drink has several main varieties, some of which can be drunk like whiskey or cognac, enjoying the bouquet and taste, while others can be consumed only as part of cocktails, but the most famous ones.
Rum comes in three main types. The traditional dark rum, known from tales of pirates and sailors, first appeared in the Caribbean. All expensive and even collectible types of rum belong to this class of drinks. Dark, aka red or black rum, is not only Caribbean, but also Jamaican, from Haiti and Martinique. This rum is made using real molasses and kept for many years in charred oak barrels. Dark rum can be added to cocktails with a complex rich taste, but it is better to enjoy its luxurious bouquet, serving it as a whiskey or cognac, without additional additives, well, perhaps with ice.
Notable dark rum varieties include Flor de Caña Centenario, Angostura 1919, Ron Zacapa XO and El Dorado 15
Light, also known as white or silver rum, is the most neutral of the types of rum. This drink with a light aroma and sweetish neutral liqueur taste is filtered and stored for up to a year in steel tanks. Sometimes white rum is slightly tinted with caramel, but its bouquet still remains very far from perfect. Aromatic and spicy rum is made from the same type of rum, adding flavorings or spices to the drink, respectively. Silver rum is drunk only in combination with other drinks.
Gold (gold) rum, also known as amber, is a cross between matured and filtered rum. This type of rum is obtained by infusing white rum in oak barrels. If you are not yet ready to appreciate all the charm of expensive collectible types of rum, start learning to enjoy the bouquet of the drink from the “golden” varieties. Golden Rum is equally suitable for mixing and drinking solo.
How to drink dark and golden rum
Dark and golden rum can be drunk by pouring into a low, pot-bellied glass filled with ice, like whiskey, on a hot day, or, like brandy, without anything, heating the glass with your hands to give the aroma to the maximum.
There are more than one hundred recipes for cocktails with rum. The most famous are, of course, the planter’s punch, mojito and daiquiri.
Rum can be added to tea. There is a classic recipe according to which a spoonful of butter is put on the bottom of the glass, the same amount of sugar, 50 ml of rum is poured and filled to the brim with hot strong black tea
To make a mojito, take: – 2 teaspoons of sugar; – 6-8 mint leaves; – 1 lime; – 60 ml of light rum; – soda; – ice.
