Rum Barcelo: an overview of the types and tastes of the brand

Dominican rum Barceló appeared in 1929. The new brand was founded by a native of Spain – Juliano Barcelo. The main advantage of the drink was the addition of pure cane juice to the mash, which automatically reduces the amount of harmful fusel oils in the finished distillate.

In 2006, the family business was bought out by the Spanish distributor of the product, MG. At the same time, the descendants of the founder of the company became part of the board of directors of the renewed company, which was named Ron Barceló SRL.

Varieties of the drink

The Barcelo line includes 9 items. The strength of most of them is 37,5 degrees.

  1. Barcelo Blanco (Rome Barcelo Blanco)

A colorless drink, slightly refined by aging. There are hints of white pepper and green bananas in its aroma, while the taste contains banana and peppery-cinnamon undertones.

In addition to the main colorless version, there are two more “white” modifications of the drink:

  1. Barcelo White Aged

A year-old distillate whose taste and aroma are characterized by the presence of a coconut cappuccino theme, set off by nutty and minty undertones.

  2. Barcelo Blanco Gran Platinum

An original product that has been aged for six years and then filtered.

The result of these manipulations are fruity-vanilla components of the aroma, which are distinguished by a pronounced citrus accent, as well as lemon-eucalyptus notes in the taste, accompanied by a sweet aftertaste with a slight peppery tint.

“Colored” varieties of the brand we are interested in are represented by the following brands:

  1. Barcelo Dorado (rom Barselo Dorado)

A golden drink that spent a year in a bourbon barrel. Hence, creamy-woody motifs on the palate and a long spicy-raisin aftertaste.

  2. Barcelo Añejo

Dark noble elixir, whose rich amber color indicates its four years of exposure.

It has a round fruity-chocolate taste, gradually turning into a cherry aftertaste, accompanied by light peppery-tobacco associations.

  3. Barcelo Gran Añejo

Elite dark amber alcohol, aged for five years in bourbon barrels.

The aroma of the drink is interspersed with vanilla, malt, fragrant tobacco and anise motifs.

The buttery chocolate flavor ends with a caramel-nut aftertaste.

  4. Barcelo Imperial (Barcelo Imperial rum)

    Reddish-amber ten-year-old aristocrat with a strength of 38 degrees.

Taste and aroma evoke memories of candied pineapple, ripe fruit, vanilla ice cream, coffee caramel and roasted nuts.

  5. Barcelo Imperial Premium Blend

Released in 2011 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the previous brand.

Accordingly, it consists of a blend of 30 cane distillates, previously aged in bourbon barrels from a year to three decades.

Finally, the blend thus obtained spends another two years in Bordeaux casks.

This viscous 43-degree elixir of rich dark amber color harmoniously combines the motifs of coffee, chocolate, fruits, tobacco, spices, nuts and creamy desserts inherent in the previously mentioned varieties of the Dominican drink.

  6. Barcelo Cream

A 17% cream liqueur based on ordinary white rum.

It has a balanced tropical taste with elements of coconut, pineapple, vanilla and almonds.
