Now, going to any bar, you can choose from a wide range of cocktails. But in the USSR, those who wanted to experiment with alcohol were severely limited in their capabilities.
However, even in such conditions, completely “killer” cocktails appeared: “Northern Lights” and even more famous “Ruff”.
What is a cocktail “Ruff”
“Ruff”, less often called “Polar Bear” – a very strong alcoholic cocktail based on beer with the addition of vodka. He appeared in the USSR as a response to comrades who wanted to relax and unwind after work shifts, the fight against drunkenness at the state level.
As part of this struggle, only beer could be found in retail outlets, which very conditionally deserved such a name. And so initially weak, it was also diluted. But after the imperceptible topping up of vodka “from under the floor”, the appearance of the contents of the mug did not change in any way, which cannot be said about the effect of the drink.
The strength of Soviet beer left much to be desired, so resourceful citizens found a way to “raise the degree”.
As for the name, there are different versions. Historians find its roots back in the XNUMXth century, mentioning the custom, after merchant meals, to pour the remnants of alcohol into one vessel called a “ruff”.
But most likely, everything is much simpler – the next morning after libations, the skull and entrails seem to be scratched from the inside by the hard fins of this fish.
What ingredients are needed for a real “Ruff”
The composition of “Ruff” is extremely simple. Base – 400 ml of any lager. The pronounced aroma of hops inherent in light beer interrupts the sharp alcohol smell of vodka. You can take as a basis, everything that is on the shelves of supermarkets, for example:
- Amstel;
- Heineken;
- Stella Artois;
- “Baltika 7”;
- “Three Bears”.
You will also need vodka – 60 ml. Based on the price-quality ratio, I recommend:
- “Winter road”;
- “Husky”;
- “Myagkov”;
- “Moroshu”;
- “Khortitsa”.
There is also an “elite” version of “Ruff”. For such a cocktail, in addition to beer (300 ml) and vodka (40 ml), you will need liquid honey (10 g), a lime quarter and, if desired, ice. Here it is already recommended to take higher quality alcohol, for example, craft light beer:
- Brewlander Hope Summer Ale;
- Viaemilia Brewery of the Duchy;
- Galaxy IPA Other Half Brewing;
- St. Feuillien Triple Brewery St-Feuillien;
- Green Man IPA.
And expensive vodka:
- Absolutely;
- Finland;
- Grey Goose;
- Beluga
- Stolichnaya.
“Ruff” is a cocktail for those who believe that “beer without vodka is money down the drain.”
How to cook Ersh
Even a novice “bartender” can cook “Ruff”:
- In a standard beer glass with a volume of 0,5 liters, beer is poured so that a minimum of foam is formed.
- Vodka is also poured in there, ice is added if desired.
The cocktail is ready in 5-7 minutes, when both drinks are well mixed.
How to cook “Ruff”:
A mockery of the body or still a good cocktail
Any cocktail in terms of impact on the body can hardly be called “good”. But “Ruff” in this regard beats all records. A mixture of beer and vodka intoxicates much faster than the same drinks in the same volume, but drunk separately.
The bubbles of carbon dioxide from beer are to blame for everything, thanks to which vodka is almost instantly absorbed into the gastric mucosa, and from there it enters the blood and brain. Enough 1-2 glasses for a complete loss of touch with reality.
Due to such “shock” rates of ethanol entering the body, he does not have time to process it. In addition, yeast and malt do not mix very well with alcohol. As a result – the most severe intoxication in the morning, popularly referred to as a hangover.
If you drink Ruff and feel fine in the morning, you are one of the very lucky few.
“Ruff” – a cocktail that could not be born, perhaps, anywhere, except for the conditions of the severe Soviet shortage. With his task – to quickly and cheaply provide a strong intoxication – he coped with one hundred percent. But in terms of health effects, this combination of drinks is just a nightmare.
Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to your health. Take care of yourself!
Have you tried this cocktail? What were the feelings the next morning? Are you ready to drink “Ruff” further or was it enough once?
