Another contagious disease returns after whooping cough and measles. During the year, the number of rubella patients has increased sixfold, Rzeczpospolita is alarming.
Data on the avalanche of new cases are brought by the recently published report of the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene. Statistics show that in 2012, 6263 people fell ill with rubella. In the following year, there were already 38548 cases.
This is the compensatory epidemic that could have been expected. In the past, only girls were vaccinated against rubella. That is why today it is mainly men, between the ages of 16 and 25, who develop this disease – says Monika Wróbel from the NIZP PZH.
The highest number of cases was in Małopolska, where 8557 cases were recorded. In 2013, we had a more than tenfold increase in the incidence of this disease compared to 2012 – says Elżbieta Kuras, spokesman for the provincial sanitary station in Krakow.
Epidemiologists are beginning to think about how to fight the disease. For now, we are observing whether disease outbreaks develop. If so, we will take appropriate action. These can be, for example, additional vaccinations for men – says Elżbieta Kuras.
