Rubber ball and 3 more types of toys that are dangerous for dogs
Cats can play with anything: a twig, a leaf, a bottle cap, your can of cream. But in dogs, freedom of choice is limited.
If the puppy has nothing to play with, he will find his own entertainment. And rest assured: you won’t like it. Who really likes gnawed boots or chair legs. But even choosing a real dog toy at a pet store, you need to measure it seven times. Even specially formulated products for pets can be dangerous, experts say.
President of the Russian Cynological Federation
“Choosing the wrong toy for your beloved dog can backfire. At best, the dog will not be interested in the toy; at worst, it will suffer or harm itself. Therefore, I advise you to always pay attention to the material from which the toy is made, to its size and additional small details. “
Top 4 most inappropriate toys
Plastic bottles
They attract dogs with their sound when playing: loud, boomy, cool. But you shouldn’t indulge your pet: hard plastic can hurt its mouth. In addition, it grinds teeth down a lot, almost like sandpaper. Damaged teeth will start to hurt, and then you will have to take the dog to the dentist.
Balls
Not all, but many. Avoid thin rubber balls, bouncing balls, and fragile plastic discs. They are dangerous for three reasons: the dog can choke on a dubious filler like padding polyester or gel, the material of the ball itself can be toxic to the pet, in addition, the dog will chew it easily – this is also fraught with the fact that the dog will choke.
Pay attention to the size of the ball, it should match the size of the pet’s mouth. If the ball is too small and there is no rope on it, there is a risk of suffocation if the toy accidentally slips into the dog’s throat.
Toys with small parts
Everything is exactly the same as with children. You won’t buy a toy for a child, a part with which he can accidentally bite off and swallow? So it is with the dog. If a funny doll has plastic eyes, a mustache sticking out, buttons or other details are sewn on, leave such a toy in the store.
Foam PVC toys
The texture of these toys is ideal for chewing, which is why dogs are very fond of them. But their main danger is toxicity. Phthalates, substances that, when accumulated in the body, increase the risk of developing kidney, liver and reproductive problems, give these toys elasticity. And if a dog accidentally bites off and swallows a piece of such a toy, serious problems with the gastrointestinal tract can begin: due to the plasticity of the material, the fragment will not be able to leave the body in a natural way. If the plastic remains in the stomach, it can cause spontaneous bouts of vomiting, gastritis, the dog may lose appetite and become less active.
