Rovamycine – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Rovamycine is a drug used in otolaryngology and dentistry to treat infections of the lower and upper respiratory tract. The preparation is anti-infective and has antibacterial properties. It prevents congenital toxoplasmosis and prevents meningitis. Rovamycine is available in tablet form and can only be obtained with a prescription.

Indications for the use of the drug Rovamycine

The active substance of Rovamycine is spiramycin. The drug is given to treat the following infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to spiramycin:

  1. upper and lower respiratory tract infections: inflammation of the throat, tonsils, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, acute pneumonia and bronchitis, atypical pneumonia,
  2. prophylactically in congenital toxoplasmosis,
  3. prevention of meningococcal meningitis if you are carriers of the nasopharyngeal meningitis,
  4. prophylaxis of relapses of rheumatic fever in patients allergic to penicillin,
  5. in acute conditions in dentistry (abscesses, stomatitis with hyperemia, acute gingivitis, ulcerative necrotizing gingivitis),
  6. urethritis caused by chlamydia,
  7. skin infections,
  8. cryptosporidiosis,
  9. pregnant toxoplasmosis.

Dosage

  1. Adults: basic dose of 6 MIU per day in 2 divided doses, your doctor may increase this dose to 9 MIU per day in 3 divided doses.
  2. Children: the basic dose is 150 IU / kg body weight daily in 000-2 divided doses, the doctor may increase this dose to 3 IU / kg body weight daily in 300-000 divided doses.
  3. To prevent meningococcal meningitis:
  4. Adults: 3 MIU every 12 hours for 5 days
  5. Adults: 3 MIU every 12 hours for 5 days

children: 75 IU / kg body weight every 000 hours for 12 days.

Rovamycine and contraindications

A contraindication to the use of Rovamycine is hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.

Rovamycine – warnings

  1. Rovamycine does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and operate equipment / machines.
  2. If you have ever had hypersensitivity reactions to macrolide antibiotics or to other drugs or allergens, please inform your doctor.
  3. In people with renal insufficiency, no dose adjustment is needed for Rovamycine.
  4. Side effects are especially intense in people with hepatic insufficiency.
  5. Rovamycine should not be used in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency due to the risk of acute haemolysis.
  6. Pregnant women should only use the medicine when the doctor deems it necessary.
  7. The spiramycin contained in the drug passes into breast milk. If the doctor considers it necessary to use the drug, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding.

Rovamycine – interactions

Inform your doctor if you use preparations such as: levodopa or carbidopa. Simultaneous intake of spiramycin with these preparations may block their absorption and reduce the concentration of carbidopa and levodopa in the blood. You should take medications under the supervision of a physician. Your doctor will adjust the levodopa doses as needed.

Rovamycine – side effects

Rovamycine is a drug that may cause, among other things: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pseudomembranous enteritis (manifested, inter alia, diarrhea), rash, hives, itching, angioedema (possible swelling of the mouth, tongue, throat, larynx impeding breathing), anaphylactic shock.
