Rose (Rose) – female cherry-club cocktail

Cocktail “Rose” is remembered for its delicate cherry flavor with hints of strawberries and a slight bitterness of vermouth in the aftertaste. Fortress – 15-17% vol. The drink is classified as a female aperitif (served before the main meal).

Historical information

The recipe for the Rose cocktail was invented in 1919 by bartender Johnny Mitta, who worked at the Chatham Hotel in Paris, one of the most popular establishments in the city at that time. For a long time, “Rose” remained the bar’s signature cocktail, and it was ordered mainly by women, who were attracted by the delicate pink color, reminiscent of a flower. That’s how the name came about.

The general public first learned about this cocktail from Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book, which was published in 1927. Initially, Rose used redcurrant syrup instead of cherry brandy, but over time, bartenders noticed that the liquor gives the necessary balance between acid and sweetness, and also increases the strength.

“Rose” is included in the list of official cocktails of the International Bartending Association (IBA) and is in the category “Modern classics (Contemporary classics)”.

One of the variations of the cocktail is called “English rose”, in which cherry liqueur is replaced with dry London gin.

Classic rose cocktail recipe

Composition and proportions:

  • clear cherry liqueur (Kirsch) – 20 ml;
  • dry white vermouth – 20 ml;
  • strawberry syrup – 3 drops (dash);
  • cherry, strawberry or rose petal – for decoration.

Transparent cherry liqueur can be replaced with ordinary red, the taste of the cocktail will not change much, only the color will become richer. Sometimes the ingredients are combined in a shaker rather than a mixing glass, but this is already a matter of taste, since the density of the components does not differ much and you can do without a shaker. In some bars, the serving glass is garnished with a rim of sugar soaked in grenadine (pomegranate syrup).

Preparation

1. Fill mixing glass with ice.

2. Add cherry liqueur, vermouth and strawberry syrup. Mix.

3. Pour the finished cocktail through a strainer (bar strainer) into a pre-chilled cocktail glass (martini glass).

4. Garnish with a cherry (strawberry) or rose petal.
