Rose Olivia Rose Austin

English roses are a relatively new variety of these garden flowers. The first “Englishwoman” only recently celebrated a half-century anniversary.

The author and founder of this beauty is D. Austin, an ordinary farmer from England. He was inspired to develop a new series of flowers by the spectacle of old French varieties of roses. He decided to develop a new variety that would look like old plants, but was distinguished by a strong smell and a beautiful bush shape. The heroines of today’s article are roses Olivia Rose Austin.

The result of crossing an old Gallic variety with modern floribundas was an absolutely amazing success. Further hybridizations turned out to be only minor polishing of the result obtained initially. Subsequent work was aimed at obtaining re-blooming plants and strengthening immunity.

Attention! Today, the hallmarks of English varieties are disease resistance and a strong “fruity” aroma, before which even some perfumes fade.

On the market, “English women” began to appear recently. The reason is that the Austin company is very attentive to how their pets will feel in a cold, harsh continental climate. After all, these flowers cannot be called frost-resistant. But experienced gardeners successfully acclimatize unusual varieties: they are very beautiful!

Description

This magnificent variety is considered by many experts to be the best in the constellation Austin.

Comment! Rose got its name in honor of the granddaughter of the founder of the company.

In 2014, the variety was highly appreciated at the exhibition in Chelsea (2014, May). The variety was bred in 2005. Roses belong to the category “shrab” (landscape, park). Perfect for planting on lawns and flower beds. A trimmed bush can be given a wide variety of shapes. The diameter of the flowers is from 7 to 8 cm. Like the vast majority of English varieties, the flowers are cup-shaped. The rose is distinguished by its increased terryness. The color is very beautiful, light pink. When the rosette opens completely, the center of the yellow-golden hue is noticeable. Flowers have a strong aroma with a fruity tinge.

Important! Unlike most re-blooming Austin roses, the variety blooms not in two, but in three stages, literally until the first frost.

The foliage is bright, dark shade, glossy. It creates a beautiful background for the most delicate flowers. Young leaves have a brownish-burgundy hue. The bush is almost spherical, beautifully formed. Its height is 1 m, width 0,75 m. The bush is formed by strong branches, each of which ends with a single flower. The variety has good immunity and is resistant to diseases. Many flower growers note that, unlike most “Englishwomen”, this variety tolerates harsh winters well.

Features of care

Olivia Rose Austin prefers fertile soils with neutral reactions, saturated with useful mineral and organic substances. Drainage is essential.

  1. The site for roses is better to choose well-lit, not too windy. The planting hole is prepared so that its dimensions are commensurate with the root system of the plant. After planting, the rose bush should be well watered. A container rose does not need immediate feeding, since there is plenty of fertilizer for a clod of earth. Another top dressing will be required in the summer.
  2. Watering frequency: 1-2 times a week in small portions so that the soil is well saturated with water. At the same time, it is not the bush itself that is watered, but the soil. In a dry summer, the rose will answer the diligent gardener with chic flowers.
  3. Fertilizers use complex. The frequency of fertilizing for roses is once every two weeks. Loves this variety and rotted organic manure as mulch. It contributes to a longer retention of moisture in the soil, and is a source of substances useful for the plant.

Pruning is the most important moment in the care of all “ostins”, as they grow quite strongly. By winter, the rose is cut in height by about 60%, carefully spud and covered. At the same time, you need to pay attention to the air access to the plant. If this rule is neglected, there is a risk of fungal infections and putrefactive diseases. Before you cover the roses, you need to carefully collect all the foliage. It is advisable to treat the soil with an antifungal agent. All these works must be carried out before the onset of stable frosts.

Warning! It is impossible to use fallen leaves for hilling rose bushes, as it can be a source of microspores of the fungus.

You can propagate the rose by dividing the bushes, seeds and cuttings.

I bought a variety of English roses Olivia Rose to replenish the collection of “Englishwomen”. Now I can’t imagine my rose garden without this beauty. The plant is original and beautiful. It is also incredibly winter hardy. As for maintenance, there are no special problems either. There are no more whims than other varieties of roses.

A variety from the Austin “Olivia” series struck me with its beauty and unusualness. The color is luxurious pink, the core is yellowish, like ghee. The smell is just great. However, like the entire Austin series. The rosette is very pretty. I saw such a terry pompom only in dahlias. At the same time, the rosette is perfectly formed, neat and holds even in old flowers. In general, a real “medieval” rose for a beautiful lady. Looks great both on the site and in the cut.
