Rockery in landscape design
Increasingly, gardeners prefer to arrange rockeries in their personal plot. This type of landscape design is outwardly similar to a rock garden, although it has several significant differences. First of all, it is much easier and cheaper to create such a composition. In addition, plants used in a rocky garden require less attention.
Arrangement of rockeries in landscape design
Translated from English rockery means “rocky garden”. Therefore, when creating such a landscape, the emphasis should be on the beauty of boulders and minerals. And plants serve only as a decoration for stones.
First of all, you should choose the best place for your rocky garden. Basic Rules:
- The composition should not be placed next to a house or other building. Its decorative effect will suffer from this. In addition, snow and rain escaping from the roof can erode the structure.
- Don’t set up your composition near a tall tree. This will make it difficult to clean the fallen leaves.
- If the only suitable area is near a fence, then plant climbing plants against the wall. Against the backdrop of greenery, such a garden looks much more spectacular.
- Choose lighted areas. At the same time, try to ensure that most of the structure is oriented to the southwest or southeast.
- Use no more than 2 types of stones.
Before proceeding with the arrangement of the structure, be sure to draw its plan. This way, you will immediately notice design flaws and will not waste time shifting materials.
Trees and shrubs for a rocky garden cannot be tall. Keep in mind that plant growth should not exceed half a meter for flat landscapes. If you arrange a hilly slide, then crops no higher than one and a half meters are allowed.
A composition of coniferous and deciduous plants planted nearby looks much more impressive
Use moderation when setting up. Too much vegetation will noticeably reduce the decorative effect of the garden and make it look like an ordinary flower bed. Plant selection:
- Dominants. It is advisable to plant 2-3 large crops in the center, on which attention will be focused. For these purposes, use spherical thuja or Canadian fir “Konica”. From larch trees, Kuril tea, dwarf barberry or Japanese spirea are suitable.
- Secondary plants. Juniper, Thunberg barberry, ground cover varieties of roses or cotoneaster are ideal.
- Background cultures. Such plants fill the free space between the boulders. For these purposes, sedum, tenacious, phlox, dwarf carnations, bells are used. If you want bright accents, then plant irises, crocuses, hyacinths and snowdrops. Cultures like these will add color to the composition in early spring.
Rockery will decorate your site. In this case, you can create any composition yourself. The main thing is to connect imagination and adhere to the rules of landscape design. And then your rocky garden will not go unnoticed.
