Psychiatric disorders should be properly diagnosed and treated. Risperidone is a drug that is used, inter alia, in the treatment of schizophrenia. Taking it should be closely related to the psychiatrist’s recommendations.

Risperidon – indications

Risperidone film-coated tablets with antipsychotic activity are used in psychiatry. Their action is focused around the central nervous system. The indications for taking Risperidone are:

  1. treatment of schizophrenia,
  2. in bipolar disorder, treat moderate to severe manic episodes
  3. treatment for up to 6 weeks in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia of persistent aggression when the patient does not respond to nonphamacological methods, poses a threat to himself and others,
  4. short-term (maximum 6 weeks) treatment of children over 5 years of age and adolescents with mental retardation or low intellectual performance (according to DSM-IV criteria), who develop persistent aggression resulting from behavioral disorders and require pharmacological treatment – Risperidone may be prescribed only by a physician specialized in pediatric neurology or psychiatry, and the treatment itself should be part of a comprehensive treatment program.

Risperidone – composition

The active substance in Risperidone is the substance of the same name, risperidone. In addition, the composition includes:

  1. in the tablet core: corn starch, lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate and hypromellose,
  2. in the Risperidone tablet coating: fallry green 02H21429, propylene glycol, titanium dioxide, hypromellose 5cP, indigotine, quinoline yellow and talc.

Risperidone – dosage

Risperidon is for oral use. One tablet contains from 1 mg to 3 mg of the active substance – risperidone. The frequency of admission and the dose are determined by the attending physician. Risperidone tablets can be taken with or without food, but should be washed down with a certain amount of water (more than 200 ml).

In therapy with Risperidone, it is important to remember to gradually discontinue the drug. It is also not recommended for children under 15 years of age. The recommendation regarding Risperidone and alcohol is also important. This is because alcoholic drinks should not be consumed during treatment with the drug.

Risperidone – contraindications

You should not take Risperidone if:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the drug,
  2. cardiovascular disorders and other heart diseases,
  3. liver and kidney diseases,
  4. low blood pressure with dizziness,
  5. Parkinson’s disease,
  6. intolerance to certain sugars, including lactose,
  7. epilepsy
  8. taking other drugs that act on the central nervous system,
  9. taking medications that increase the activity of liver enzymes,
  10. taking other medications, including those without prescription,
  11. Risperidone should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Risperidone – substitutes and price

Risperidone is available only by prescription. Its substitutes can be: Rispolept, Orizon or Speridan. The price of Risperidone 20 tablets is about PLN 25.

Risperidon – uwagi

Before taking Risperidone for the first time, read the package leaflet and check the use-by date. Do not use the drug beyond this date. Risperidon should be stored in a tightly closed container, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, out of the reach of children.

During treatment with Risperidone, it is absolutely necessary to follow the instructions of the treating physician. The drug is assigned individually to a person with specific diseases and ailments, therefore it should not be shared with other people or used in cases of other conditions without consulting a doctor first.

During therapy with Risperidone, driving vehicles and operating machinery should be avoided.

Risperidone – side effects

Side effects of using Risperidone include:

  1. headaches,
  2. sleep disturbances,
  3. anxiety and agitation,
  4. tiredness,
  5. dizziness,
  6. constipation, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain
  7. urinary incontinence
  8. decreased libido,
  9. allergic reactions
  10. menstrual disorders and breast lactation in women,
  11. enlargement of the mammary glands in men,
  12. blurred vision,
  13. reduced mobility,
  14. accelerated heartbeat
  15. weight gain,
  16. seizures
  17. disturbances in body temperature,
  18. swelling.
