Risk factors and prevention of rubella
Risk factors
- Not having received the rubella vaccine.
- Travel to a developing country where the disease is present without having received the rubella vaccine.
Prevention
Why prevent? |
When a pregnant woman contracts the rubella virus during the first 3 months of pregnancy, it can have serious consequences for the development of the fetus, and sometimes even death. |
Can we prevent? |
The vaccine is the best way to prevent rubella infection. The MMR vaccine (against measles, rubella and mumps or MMR II) is given to children in two doses, the first usually around 12 months and the second around 18 months. Both in France and Canada, this vaccine is fully reimbursed by health insurance. A vaccine is available for women of childbearing age who may not have received the vaccine in childhood. The vaccine cannot be given to pregnant women. |
