People at risk

While back pain can affect anyone, some people are more prone to this type of pain, including:

  • Workers forced to carry heavy loads, or to perform repetitive gestures straining the back
  • The pregnant women
  • People over 40 (between 40 and 80)3
  • Overweight or obese people
  • People who do little or no physical activity

Risk factors

Several factors increase the risk of back pain becoming chronic. There are many factors11 :

  • low level of education and resources
  • professional dissatisfaction
  • apprehension of movement and attitude of avoidance (when you do not move for fear of hurting yourself)
  • negative family events (bereavement, divorce, etc.)
  • stress, anxiety, or depression
  • lack of physical exercise
