Ringworm

General description of the disease

Ringworm is an infectious disease of the skin, nails and hair caused by a fungus of the genus Microsporum.

Causes and methods of transmission of ringworm:

  • contact with a sick animal (mainly stray dogs and cats are carriers) or with a person;
  • using only towels, scissors, hygiene products, washcloths, combs, bed linen, shoes with the patient;
  • reduced immunity;
  • non-compliance with personal hygiene products;
  • in hairdressing and beauty salons, they do not carry out the necessary and correct processing of working tools.

Also, transmission of the disease through soil or soil is possible (an infected piece of wool (hair, nail plate) fell from a sick animal (human), a spore of the fungus got into the soil and began to reproduce). The activity of the fungus in the ground can last for several months.

Types and symptoms of ringworm:

  1. 1 skin (smooth skin) – the fungus does not affect the vellus and hard hairs, a small red spot is first formed on the skin, which increases in size over time, and a red rim appears along its edge, consisting of many small pimples. If the disease is not treated, then new foci may appear nearby. The person may feel itchy, but often there are no special symptoms.
  2. 2 scalp – where the focus of the disease has arisen, the hair becomes brittle, dull, and loses its volume and elasticity. After a while (when the fungus penetrates into the hair follicle), the hair begins to break off at a height of 1-2 centimeters from the surface of the head (skin). The focus becomes like a grayish stump.

There are different forms of ringworm flow:

  • abortive – with this form, the symptoms are mild, surface lesions are pale (barely noticeable);
  • edematous-erythematous – in places where lichen, the spots are very inflamed, itchy, allergic reactions often occur, a slight peeling of the skin is noticeable (mostly young women and children are ill);
  • papular-squamous – only individual areas on the chest and face are affected, the spots are purple in color and heavily covered with scales, there is a strong burning sensation and itching of lichen, the surface of the skin becomes bumpy;
  • deep – the female legs suffer from the fungus, on which subcutaneous nodules form, the size of which can reach 3 centimeters in diameter;
  • infiltrative-suppurative (the most complex course of the disease) – with this form, the ringworm plaque is too dense and swollen, pus oozes from the pores of the skin;
  • onychomycosis (versicolor of the nail plate) – a light, dull spot forms on the edge of the nail, and the nail plate itself becomes fragile and begins to crumble;
  • ringworm of the palms and soles – a thick layer of keratinized skin forms on the soles and palms, which looks like a callus (in fact, it is a dry lichen plaque).
