Reusable diapers: pros and cons, personal experience

The one-year-old son of a healthy-food-near-me.com correspondent tried both options on himself.

Looking at how much our young family spends on diapers, I tried to quickly potty train my son. At 6-7 months, when, according to the laws of pediatricians, a child can be put on a chair, the first thing I did was put mine on a pot. But it was difficult to predict the activity of the baby’s intestines and bladder. The child did not have any focused gazes or bulging eyes. We did not have time to reach our destination. And when the son learned to walk, he resisted the pot at all.

The omniscient moms forum opened reusable diapers for me. And these are not gauze bandages with which our mothers and grandmothers suffered, but very cute panties with fasteners. The fasteners are adjustable, so the diapers are designed for babies from 3 to 15 kg – they will fit even three-year-olds. Inside the panties there is a pocket for absorbent liners. At night and for a walk, it is advised to use two earbuds, during the day at home one is enough.

True, one such reusable diaper costs as much as a pack of disposable ones – 600-700 rubles. And for regular use, you need at least 8 of them. Quite a tiny bit and even more. It’s still cheaper than buying disposable diapers though. And on “Aliexpress” such panties can be ordered for a measly 100-200 rubles, which I, unfortunately, found out late.

I immediately appreciated the colors of the diapers: a stylish cage, a ladybug, funny owlets. The manufacturer promised that the color will not fade after many washes. I did not deceive – the paints were really preserved, and the fasteners did not come off. By the way, the panties can also be used for swimming in the pool.

Another plus is environmental concern. According to some reports, most disposable diapers take 200-500 years to decompose.

Even if these are exaggerated numbers, imagine what a pile of diaper garbage is left after each baby.

However, I could not completely abandon disposable diapers. And that’s why.

1. They are too bulky.

Disposable diapers are thin because they absorb moisture with an absorbent gel. Reusable gel does not have such a gel. But there are dense liners with a thickness of almost a centimeter and the main layer. As a result, even a tiny ass “grows” to a decent size, and loose pants become tight.

2. They smell

I don’t know what is included in disposable diapers, but they also absorb an unpleasant smell. I do not recommend saving up reusable diapers after use – you will suffocate.

3. They can leak

Even two liners do not guarantee that baby pants will stay dry. Reusable diapers can leak on the sides, so I keep disposable diapers for long walks and nightlife.

4. They are at one time

A disposable diaper can take two or three small trips. Reusable panties for a one-year-old child are enough for a time. Then I advise you to quickly change it. The diaper swells a lot, it can leak, and the smell is such that it hurts your eyes.

5. They are not for the squeamish

The disposable diaper can be folded up and thrown away after big tasks. Reusable with baby feces cannot be thrown into the washing machine. First you have to rinse it thoroughly.

6. More spending on powder and utility bills

Yes, reusable diapers are cheaper than disposable ones. However, the costs of powder, water and electricity are increasing. You can save only electricity – to wash at night or early in the morning.

7. It is eternal wash

Reusable diapers cannot be dried on a battery or heater – the waterproof layer will come off the outer fabric and lose its properties. Therefore, get ready that the dryer will always be covered with children’s panties. And you will have to wash reusable diapers every day.
