Reusable diapers – action, functions, advantages. Types of reusable diapers – which one to choose?

Reusable diapers return to favor. It is not about traditional cloth diapers, but modern, comfortable and ecological solutions that every mother will love. There are several types of reusable diapers on the market. Read what to look for when buying reusable diapers and what their advantages and disadvantages are.

Reusable diapers – action

Reusable diapers are diapers that are made of a combination of biodegradable materials. Unlike conventional disposable diapers, reusable diapers completely exclude the use of synthetic fragrances and chemicals. Reusable diapers are gentler on your baby’s skin and have a positive effect on the environment around us.

So what biodegradable materials can we find in reusable diapers? Well, it is bamboo pulp, microfleece (a kind of soft polyester), polyurethane or cotton.

In general, the fabric adjacent to the baby’s skin is microfleece, while the outer layer is made of waterproof polyurethane. Absorbent fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, hemp and microfiber are located between the two layers.

Here’s what else are characterized by reusable diapers:

  1. reusable diapers are adjustable and open and close in a manner similar to disposable diapers: using Velcro or snaps,
  2. reusable diapers are softer than regular disposable diapers thanks to the soft fabrics used, especially bamboo,
  3. they absorb moisture very well and do not retain odors, thanks to the fact that bamboo contains antibacterial agents,
  4. reusable diapers allow the baby’s skin to breathe. In this way, they allow the little ones to feel fresh and comfortable both in summer and winter,
  5. reusable diapers are hypoallergenic, which means they are perfect for sensitive skin,
  6. they are easy to use and require no cooking. You just wash them in the washing machine. After cleaning, you can dry them in a dryer or on a string,
  7. Reusable diapers are available in a variety of colors and designs.

Reusable diapers – advantages of use

Ecological diapers and products for women are part of the growing awareness of each individual and daily activity. Mothers and fathers have started to evaluate the number of disposable diapers they throw away weekly, monthly, and yearly.

Regarding the design and style of reusable diapers, there are several diaper “systems” to choose from. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on the needs and preferences of each family.

Reusable diapers are adjustable meaning they are virtually one size fits all. In other words, reusable diapers grow with your baby and accompany him until he learns to take care of the potty or toilet seat.

The smooth fabrics with which the reusable nappies are covered give children more freedom of movement as they gently adapt to the toddler’s skin. If you are worried about the constant washing, the fact that the inner layers of diapers are very absorbent will find relief. In fact, they are even more absorbent than disposable diapers.

The high absorbency of reusable diapers, combined with their softness, protects your baby’s skin. This means your baby will be less likely to suffer from diaper rash. The big advantage of reusable diapers is also that they do not contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the baby’s skin.

Reusable or disposable diapers?

Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages. Disposable diapers are much more comfortable for young, busy mums. After changing the baby, it is enough to fold the diaper and throw it away. However, it is worth remembering that today the world is struggling with an avalanche of rubbish, and hygiene utensils are a huge part of it. Therefore, reusable diapers are definitely more environmentally friendly. My ecological approach to the problem can really change a lot!

Besides, a compromise is possible. It is worth using reusable diapers on a daily basis, and when traveling or in other situations where it is difficult to store and wash used cartridges, use disposable diapers.

Types of reusable diapers

Moms can choose from different types of reusable diapers. The choice depends on the convenience of use, both by the baby and mother. It is important that the reusable diapers have the required approvals. The following are available on the market:

  1. standard folded reusable diapers – they are available in various sizes and colors, they are soft, absorbent and have antibacterial properties when it comes to materials, reusable bamboo, flannel, tetras and cotton diapers are produced; their functionality, however, increases only with the use of accessories – without them, they are ordinary diapers,
  2. reusable molded diapers of a specific shapewhich allows for an optimal fit, they are available in several sizes; reusable cotton, hemp, terry, flannel, bamboo and microfiber diapers are available; require the use of a waterproof cover,
  3. reusable diapers with a pocket – they are easy to use, made of two layers of material (waterproof outer and inner one isolating the child’s skin from moisture), between which there is a pocket for a replaceable absorbent pad,
  4. all-in-one reusable diaper (AIO) – comfortable to use, but dries long after washing due to its construction – all its layers, including the outer waterproof cover, are sewn together,
  5. reusable diaper SIO (hybrid)– it is similar to AIO diaper, but the layers are connected with press studs, which makes washing and drying them much easier.

Fitted reusable diapers

The fitted reusable diapers are similar in shape and fit with the disposable diapers. They are hourglass-shaped and flexible around the legs and back. This means that the fitted diaper will fit snugly and comfortably around your baby and keep the perineum and bottom clean. Most of the fitted reusable diapers come with press studs or Velcro closure.

Many custom-fit reusable diapers come in sizes, so you’ll need to buy new ones as your baby grows. Some brands offer a one size option with press studs on the front of the reusable diaper. Another downside is that fitted diapers are not waterproof. They must be used with a waterproof cover.

If you need a reusable diaper that is easy to use and can handle your baby’s poop and urine perfectly well, this is a customizable reusable diaper. Their absorption capacity – thanks to the absorbency of the entire diaper – makes fitted diapers the best overnight option for the baby and, of course, the parent.

Reusable diaper with a pocket

The reusable diaper with a pocket was in fact the first innovation in reusable diapers for hundreds (maybe thousands!) Of years. It is the first true “modern cloth diaper”, although many find the design features out-of-date and complex compared to the more innovative reusable diapers.

The reusable diaper with a pocket consists of a waterproof cover with a polyester lining to keep you dry, which acts as a pocket between the lining and the cover. This allows you to put an absorbent pad in a pocket or to pre-fold it. A key disadvantage of pocket diapers is that they tend to be bulky and poorly fitted. The second (and glaring!) Disadvantage is the process of “stuffing” the pockets, which we leave to the imagination. Finally, thanks to the polyester lining, you will have very little choice when it comes to contact with your baby’s skin other than synthetic fibers.

All in one reusable diapers

All-in-one reusable diapers are one-piece diapers that consist of a set of absorbent layers (usually two, sometimes hourglass-shaped) that are sewn inside an outer waterproof cover.

All-in-one reusable diapers are most similar to disposable diapers, comfortable all-in-one, but with a waterproof cover and an inner fabric lining, they absorb liquids well. The key advantages of AIO reusable nappies are simple design, fit (some brands) and the fact that they are a good ‘all around’ choice that can be used in almost any situation.

Reusable hybrid diapers

Reusable hybrid diapers, sometimes called All In Two (or AI2) diapers, are designed as a system that makes it easier for parents to naturally diaper their babies. Reusable hybrid diapers consist of a shell (or diaper cover) into which various absorbent layers are placed.

The Hybrid style got its name as the absorbent layers used can be either woven or disposable (like the GroVia Biosoaker), selected depending on the setting. For example, you may choose to use absorbent material always at home, but use disposables when going to kindergarten or traveling. Hybrid systems can be available in sizes (which means additional purchases as the child grows) or in a single size option (which grows with the child).

A key disadvantage of reusable hybrid diapers is that they can seem complicated. Another disadvantage is that some hybrid models lack contoured stripes in the interior, leading to a risk of leakage. The leg inserts and elastic bands used by some brands solve this problem. The key benefits of reusable hybrid diapers are the level of flexibility of the fabric used and the fact that some brands are deliberately designed to allow the outer cover to be worn multiple times between washes.

Reusable diapers – accessories

The functionality of diapers increases with the use of accessories, including:

  1. inserts – in standard and molded diapers they are key elements, replaceable and washable,
  2. covers – they are needed in the case of standard and molded reusable diapers, they protect against leaking of the diaper,
  3. tissue papers – used with inserts in children over 6 months of age; absorb the contents excreted by the child, thus eliminating the need to wash the insert; they can be thrown and flushed down the toilet,
  4. ecological detergents and disinfectants – a set of specifics in the Eco trend, which will effectively remove stains and disinfect the reusable diaper.

Washing and storing dirty reusable diapers

There are several rules for washing reusable nappies:

  1. reusable diapers can be washed in the washing machine with other things after using an absorbent cloth,
  2. contrary to appearances, it is not recommended to wash in the Eco mode in automatic washing machines – it does not provide complete disinfection of the reusable diaper,
  3. you do not need to cook the diaper, soak it before washing, or iron it after washing.

Storing reusable diapers can be troublesome due to the unpleasant odor. Therefore, it is worth buying a closable bucket that will block its release when reusable diapers are waiting for washing.
