Retinol eye cream

Retinol is one of the most famous wrinkle fighters, which primarily appear in the eyelid area. So it’s no surprise that we have high hopes for the retinol eye cream. Let’s find out how reasonable they are and whether this product will help solve the problem of crow’s feet and other wrinkles.

Features of eye creams with retinol

Retinol is a form of fat-soluble vitamin A. It is a legendary ingredient with the ability to literally revive the skin. In the skin, it is converted into retinoic acid, which in turn becomes a trigger for the production of new cells, both of the epidermis and dermal structures (collagen). Which leads to skin renewal and, as a result, smoothing of its surface, compaction, even tone, radiance, that is, we are talking about a pronounced anti-aging effect.

However, retinol eye cream is an uncommon product. But, it would seem that it is the skin of the eyelids that is the main contender for retinoic care, since it is the first to take on all the hardships of age-related changes in the face: it becomes less elastic and resilient, and it becomes less and less resistant to external and internal factors responsible for skin aging.

That is why “crow’s feet” and wrinkles on the lower eyelids can appear long before the onset of adulthood. Why do manufacturers rarely pamper us with such a cream for the skin around the eyes?

There are several complementary reasons for this:

  • retinol is an active ingredient, so much so that a product with a working concentration of this substance can cause discomfort, dry skin and even redness in some cases;

  • retinol increases the photosensitivity of the skin, that is, makes it more susceptible to the effects of sunlight (pigmentation, sunburn), which requires the use of sunscreen for the skin of the eyelids, which is also rare;

  • the skin of the eyelids is naturally thinner, more fragile, drier due to the thin hydro-lipid barrier, therefore, there is a doubly risk of getting an undesirable reaction when using retinoids.

The skin of the eyelids is thin and vulnerable.

That is why retinol is not the most common ingredient in eye creams. However, manufacturers are looking for ways to introduce this magnificent ingredient into eye cosmetics in one form or another.

  • Use retinol in a small concentration and supplement it with soothing ingredients. Comparative tests show that using retinol at a concentration of 0,15% for 8 weeks is as effective as a formula twice that concentration.

  • Proretinol is used – a precursor to retinol, which works gently and gradually, as a rule, it is well tolerated even by sensitive skin;

  • Components that have a retinal-like effect are added, for example, some varieties of algae.

How to use retinol eye cream correctly?

Eye cream with retinol is applied in the same way as any remedy for the skin around the eyes, it is applied:

  • on clean skin;

  • in a small amount;

  • along the periorbital zone on the lower eyelid and under the eyebrow – on the upper;

  • middle or ring finger;

  • light movements (do not stretch the skin).

Otherness

In some cases, when using a cream with pure retinol, redness and discomfort may occur – this is a normal skin reaction to retinoids. There is no need to be scared, in such a situation, the interval between sessions of using the product should be increased. Apply the cream 2-3 times a week, gradually the skin will get used to it.

When using a retinol product during a period of high solar activity, it is necessary to protect the skin of the eyelids from UV rays with wide sunglasses and / or sunscreen for the eyes.

Contraindications for use

Cosmetics with pure retinol for the eye contour have no contraindications, and temporary redness of the skin is a normal and predictable reaction. However, like any remedy, retinol cream in individual cases can cause a negative reaction. If the skin is initially characterized by increased reactivity, retinol products should be introduced into your care gradually. And apply the product correctly – on the orbital bone.
