Retention of urination occurs most often in elderly men and is usually preceded by intermittent urination (in small portions every several dozen minutes) or by passing it in a weak stream.
It usually results from pressure on the urethra by the enlarged prostate gland surrounding it. In general, it is accompanied by a feeling of the need to urinate, but at the same time unable to pass urine or pass it in small amounts.
Procedure
You can try to help you pass urine at home by:
• the use of warm hot water bottles or compresses on the perineum,
• rectal administration of a diastolic-analgesic suppository,
• oral administration (1-2 tablets each) of other hand-held pain relievers.
If this procedure is not effective, the patient should be taken to a doctor (or an ambulance call) in case of increasing pain. The doctor will try to drain the urine through a catheter or will refer the patient to the hospital for this purpose.
