PSYchology

Resistance is a negative reaction of a person or group of people to a particular impact.

As a rule, in a mass personality, resistance is caused by influences that require change. For example, changing rules, routines, habitual behavior, thought patterns, etc. Resistance is one form of defense.

Types of resistance

Resistances are different:

  • Internal resistance and external resistance.
  • Conscious and unconscious (or unconscious) resistance.
  • Proactive and reactive resistance.

Reasons for resistance

Typical causes are usually the same as for any conflict behavior — frustration, the desire to attract attention, the struggle for power and revenge. See Causes of Conflict Behavior

Resistance is more characteristic of people who are neurotic, with a high level of fear, as well as negativists and not inclined to cooperate.

How to minimize resistance in a group

In order to make changes in the group with the least losses, the initiator of these changes must enter the group. This means that the initiator of change needs to recognize himself not as an external party, but as part of a group in which resistance develops. In this case, it will become natural to understand the values and roles of the parties, the interdependence of actions, reactions and behavior. Only with this approach it becomes possible to build relations of cooperation and conditions for a relatively quick resolution of emerging conflicts.
