Replacing cigarettes with tobacco heaters reduces the risk of exposure to carcinogens many times over, found Dutch and British scientists.
- Tobacco warmers are much less hazardous to health than classic cigarettes, scientists have found
- The risk of developing cancer is even several dozen times lower
- It is best, however, to completely abandon the use of tobacco and nicotine-containing products in any form

Researchers from the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) of the Dutch Ministry of Health, together with researchers from the University of St. Andrzeja compared the effect on the smoker’s body of cigarette smoke and aerosol from the tobacco heating system.
In people who replaced traditional cigarettes with devices such as IQOS, 10 to even 25 times lower exposure to eight major carcinogens in cigarette smoke was noted. As a result, the risk of premature death from cancer appears to be significantly lower in those smokers who have completely replaced smoking with heating tobacco.
“Using warming tobacco products instead of cigarettes is associated with a significant increase in life expectancy for the subset of smokers that would die of cancer”.
Research has shown that different tobacco products carry a different risk of developing cancer. The researchers emphasized that tobacco warmers only reduce this risk and remain harmful to health. To minimize the risk, you should completely refrain from using tobacco, in any form.
In the RIVM assessment, a model to compare the carcinogenic potential of harmful substances in cigarette smoke and an aerosol from a tobacco heating system, in particular, may prove important for health policy makers as: «it provides useful information that can help policy makers to better understand the potential health effects those units that are shifting from smoking to novel tobacco and related products ».
In their previous analysis, the RIVM researchers confirmed that the aerosol from one of the tobacco heating systems contains significantly lower concentrations of many harmful and potentially harmful substances, including those with carcinogenic potential, compared to cigarette smoke. They also emphasized that the scope of the reduction of these substances found by them coincides with the results of the device manufacturer’s research. The study concluded that: “using tobacco sticks for the IQOS system is harmful to health, although it is probably less harmful than smoking”.
The conclusions were published in the journal “Risk Analysis” in the article: “The method of comparing the carcinogenicity of tobacco products – a case study: heating tobacco versus cigarettes”.
