😉 Hello dear readers! I invite you for a walk in San Marino. The Republic of San Marino is one of the smallest, and at the same time, the oldest states on our planet. Like the Vatican, it is geographically located within one country – Italy.
When traveling by car through the territory of the Emilio Romagna region, it is difficult not to notice the beautiful castle located on Mount Titano. This is the Republic of San Marino.
It is hard to believe, but despite the miniature size of the country, many tourists constantly come to admire the local historical sights and unique nature.
History of San Marino
According to legend, in the fourth century BC, a monk named Marino arrived on Mount Titano along with a group of his followers. Here they organized a small village.
Over time, the priest was elevated to the rank of saints, and the village received the status of a republic and the name of its founder. Due to the fact that San Marino constantly suffered from attacks by various tribes, the locals eventually decided to build fortifications around it.
In the eleventh century, local authority was already extended to some of the neighboring lands. Many feudal lords and bishops did not like this, but Pope Pius II recognized such actions of the state as legal.
From 1243 to the present day, the government is governed by two consuls, whose term of office is six months. The borders of the state were finally formed in 1463.
During its existence, it was occupied several times. The last of which dates back to 1944, when German fascist troops came here. The sovereignty of the republic was approved by the decision of the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
What to see in San Marino
San Marino covers an area of 61,2 square kilometers, and its population is just over 31 thousand people.
The main income is associated with financial activities and tourism. Despite the tiny size of the country, the football championship is regularly held here, in which 15 clubs take part. The locals are also very fond of volleyball and basketball.
I have been to San Marino three times, during a beach holiday in Rimini. From Rimini to San Marino buses are scheduled. There are 10 flights per day, a round-trip ticket of 9 euros, per person. The journey takes 45 minutes. Buses bring tourists to the historic center.
Then you need to go on foot. Immediately behind the massive gates, a town with numerous narrow street labyrinths opens in front of travelers. There are several interesting historical buildings on the territory of the country, as well as state and private museums.
As practice shows, bypassing them all in one day is very problematic, despite the size of the state of San Marino. There are many souvenir shops and shops here. It should be noted that trade here is duty-free, and therefore the local prices will pleasantly delight buyers.
Three towers
The main local attraction is the three towers of San Marino. They are the official symbol of the country, therefore, their image is present on the national flag and coat of arms. The towers were built in the eleventh, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
An interesting fact is that the last of them is still private property. Therefore, you can get inside only with the consent of the owner. In general, although the country is not as promoted as many other tourist destinations, it deserves attention and a visit.
Any traveler who comes here will be sincerely surprised at how harmoniously historical, private and tourist buildings can be combined in a tiny space.
