Reproduction of raspberries in the fall: ways
Raspberries are a sweet, tasty and healthy berry. It grows quickly and thanks to this, the raspberry plantation can be expanded with your seed. Reproduction of raspberries in autumn is considered the most favorable. There are several effective ways to increase its area in your garden.
Why is it necessary to propagate raspberries in the fall?
Raspberries are propagated in several cases: for cultivating a variety, when the yield deteriorates due to prolonged growth in one place, to increase the area of the raspberry. For mother plants, it is advisable to use shrubs aged 5 years.
Raspberries are highly adaptable and can reproduce in spring and summer as well. But there are several reasons to leave this activity for the fall.
Causes of autumn breeding:
- the yield of the variety will be higher;
- autumn time is associated with preparing the plant for winter and strengthening the root;
- the bushes adapt faster in the fall, as the constant cool weather is established;
- high air humidity has a beneficial effect on the strengthening of the plant;
- by the onset of cold weather, many cuttings grow in raspberries;
- the root system is formed by the adventitious roots.
Reproduction of raspberries should be done from August to October in cool weather. It is necessary to plant crops 20-30 days before the first frost so that the roots have time to take root.
Raspberries: several ways to breed
Plants are engaged in reproduction not only in autumn, but also in summer and spring. Some methods are easier, others are more difficult.
How to enlarge a raspberry tree:
- By dividing the plant. A young bush is dug up in the fall, carefully divided into parts and planted in a new place.
- Root cuttings. Planting material is harvested in the fall, after the foliage has fallen off. To do this, a bush is dug up and cuttings about 8-15 cm long are cut from its root, the thickness of which is 3-4 mm. The more branches and adventitious buds on the root, the faster it takes root. They are planted in autumn to a depth of 8 cm, watered and covered. They can also be stored in the cellar until spring in the pre-harvested land, preventing the roots from drying out.
- Green offspring. In summer, you may notice that small bushes have appeared between the rows of raspberries. They are called offspring. When the growth around the bushes in the raspberry grove reaches from 10 to 15 cm, they are dug up together with a clod of earth and planted for growing. They are planted in a permanent place in early autumn in cool weather.
The root system of raspberries grows quickly and therefore it is not so difficult to propagate the berry. But sometimes the roots start to interfere with neighboring plants. Regular sorrel will help cope with the growth – it will serve as a barrier if planted along the edges of the raspberry tree.
