Ficus is a perennial houseplant that grows well in home and office environments. It decorates the interior and has a positive effect on the indoor microclimate. Ficus cleans the air from harmful substances that can be emitted by furniture, wallpaper or flooring.

Reproduction of ficus: 3 ways

It is desirable to have such a useful plant in every home, but for a start, you can have one flower. Over time, it can be multiplied, and as a result, you will have many natural air purifiers.

Reproduction of ficus will improve the home microclimate.

For propagation of ficus, one of three methods is usually used:

  • vegetative – using cuttings or layering;
  • seed – ficus seeds are treated with a special composition to stimulate their growth and sown into a wet substrate, covered with a film on top;
  • cloning is used in the laboratory.

The photo shows Benjamin’s ficus, which is propagated vegetatively using apical cuttings.

How to propagate ficus vegetatively

There are three types of vegetative propagation:

  • cuttings. This method is considered to be the simplest: an apical stalk about 10 cm long with 3 pairs of leaves is separated from the mother plant at an angle. In this case, a sharp knife is used, since the scissors will ruin the stems. The lower leaves must be removed. The stalk is rooted in a pot with prepared soil from a mixture of earth and sand. From above, the stalk is covered with a bag. For fast rooting of ficus in the room, you need to maintain a temperature of + 25 ° C. Roots will appear in 10-14 days;
  • air layering. A part of the trunk is selected, located 50-60 cm from the top. Its surface 10-15 cm long is stripped of leaves and shoots. With the help of a sharp knife, 2 cuts are made on the shoot, the distance between them should be at least 3 cm, and the bark on this segment must be removed. To stimulate root formation, the prepared surface is moistened with root and wrapped with a 5-cm layer of sphagnum moss. The prepared area is wrapped in foil and tied tightly on 2 sides. After the appearance of the first roots, the shoot must be cut off under the incision and the ficus must be planted in a pot;
  • horizontal layering. In this way, dwarf, mountain or arrow-shaped species of ficus are propagated. The selected stem is cleaned from the leaves and bent in the form of an arc, and the place of the fold is dropped into a pot installed next to it. After the roots appear, the layers must be separated from the main plant.

This or that reproduction method is chosen depending on the type of ficus.

Ficuses are very unpretentious and reproduce well. Use one of these breeding methods and you will have well-rooted plants by fall. Grow ficuses and let your home be filled with fresh air!
