Replacing a bearing in a top-loading washing machine is a rather laborious process. For repairs, you will need to disassemble most of the device and reassemble it correctly and efficiently. For the procedure to be successful, you should carefully prepare, act according to the instructions. If you stock up on free time, patience and the necessary tools, you can change the used part yourself.
A set of tools for work
If the “vertical” drum has increased backlash, the machine rumbles and rattles unusually at speeds of any speed, you will need:
- Screwdriwer set.
- Screwdriver.
- Open-end wrench set.
- A selection of hexagons.
- Metal rod.
- Bearing kit suitable for your model. They are sold in specialized points, in online stores. Knowing the name of the model or having an old part with you, you can easily get a new one. The price is from 100 to 1000 rubles.
- Oil seals. They are replaced with the rest of the elements, often sold in one repair kit.
- Special lubricant for spare parts.

Replacing a bearing in a vertical washing machine
Unlike the “front-end”, the drum on the “vertical” is attached on both sides. That is, the drum has two side walls, and the shutters and the lock are on top. Step-by-step dismantling of the vertical SMA:
- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the control panel from the sides and release.

- Lifting the panel at an angle, dismantle the wires by pulling the terminals from the connectors. Don’t forget to take a photo before disconnecting, so that after you connect everything as expected.
- Now you can completely remove the panel by unscrewing the fasteners.
- Dismantle the rubber hoses by disconnecting them from the clamps. This will allow the fill valve to be removed.
- Unplug the wires and press on the outside of the holes to push the valve out.
- Remove the side panels by unscrewing the mounting screws, be sure to save the washers that act as grounding for the case. Bend the “side” and slide down. Thus, access to the bolts of the front panel was freed.
- Remove the bolts that hold the front of the case.
- Remove belt, pulley.
How to change bearings
Due to the design features, the vertical drum has two supports, so two sets of bearings will have to be replaced, and not just a failed one. A “one-sided” replacement can lead to imbalance, and the second bearing will also fail, and you will have to do all the work again.
So, let’s do it step by step:
- Remove the pulley from the drum.
- Remove the ground near the support by unscrewing the bolts with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove the old caliper using the lever method: insert two screwdrivers opposite into the holes of the support, placing the rod between them, push and unscrew.
- Thoroughly and carefully clean the shaft, grease it and the oil seal before installing. This will extend the life of the bearing.
- After replacing, put the pulley in its rightful place.
- Screw back the ground removed at the very beginning.
- Tighten the nut that holds the pulley.
- Tension the drive belt.
- Attach the side walls.
- Then mount in the reverse order, using the photos taken in the process as a guide.
- You can run test mode.
