What is the pubic symphysis?
The pubic symphysis is the name of the joint connecting the two halves of the pelvic bones at the pubic level. Usually rigid, the area relaxes during pregnancy under the action of hormones – relaxatin and progesterone – which act on the ligaments to improve the mobility of the pelvis. A relaxation that makes it possible to widen the passage for the unborn baby, but which can cause significant ligament pain, especially if the enlargement exceeds 10 millimeters. To name the pathology, we will then speak of pubic symphysis – the name of the joint -, pelvic girdle pain or Lacomme syndrome.
The pain will tend to appear when walking or changing position and may extend to the back and thighs. Pubic symphysis is a disease that most often appears during the last trimester of pregnancy and that is also found in some athletes.
What are the symptoms of pubic symphysis?
Several signs can be linked to a problem with the pubic symphysis, for example:
- repeated clicking in the pelvis;
- pain in the lower pelvis;
- pain in the lower back that radiates to the pubis and / or thighs;
- pain on stairs or when changing position;
- pain during intercourse;
- an inability to sit or stand for a long time.
Pain in the pelvis during pregnancy is not always associated with pubic symphysis. Contact your doctor who can make a diagnosis and suggest treatment for your relief.
How to relieve a pubic symphysis?
The pain varies from woman to woman, and in some cases becomes debilitating.
- A pelvic support belt to be placed at the level of the pelvis can allow you to resume a gentle activity such as walking.
- Regular appointments with an osteopath will help lift the baby to limit pressure on the painful area.
- As anti-inflammatory drugs are prohibited during pregnancy, acupuncture can also be of great help. Stimulation of specific points acts on meridians to relieve pain associated with pregnancy.
- A massage of the area, the installation of a hot compress or on the contrary an ice pack can also reduce the pain.
- Prenatal yoga is an effective activity for improving muscle building, deep stretching and thus relieving pain.
The pain caused by the pubic symphysis disappears in the vast majority of cases after childbirth.
