The coronavirus pandemic continues in the world. After a few weeks of restrictions, the first attempts to ease the limitations related to social distancing appear. Harvard researchers argue that before we loosen the restrictions, the number of tests for COVID-19 should be significantly increased.

Mitigation of restrictions in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic

In Poland, new rules have been in force since April 20 to limit the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, causing COVID-19. The government allowed access to forests and city parks, and increased the number of people allowed in shops and churches. There are plans to “ease” the restrictions.

The United States is also thinking about returning to normalcy. According to the John Hopkins Institute data, 2 people have currently tested positive for the SARS-CoV-787 coronavirus in the USA (data valid as of 901/21.04.2020/9, 20:XNUMX am). This is the highest score in the world. In connection with the emerging reports of easing the restrictions, scientists from Harvard University argue that it only makes sense if the US will perform three times more tests a day than before.

Why is it so important and how many tests, according to scientists, should we perform in Poland so that we can safely return to normal?

More coronavirus tests mean better detection

In April, 146 people were tested for coronavirus in the US. people a day. As of Friday, April 17, 3,6 million tests had been performed. According to scientists from Harvard, a safe loosening of restrictions in the US can only take place when the number of tests performed will be from 500 to 700 a day – 152 tests per 100 inhabitants.

According to the researchers, this level of testing is necessary to identify most infected people and isolate them from healthy people. So far in the US, 20 percent. performed tests gave a positive result, which, according to the scientists, is insufficient.

If you have a very high positive test rate, it means there are likely a large number of sick people who still haven’t been tested.

Extensive testing could reduce this rate to 10%, ie to the maximum rate recommended by the WHO. In Germany, this rate is 7 percent. and in South Korea about 3 percent.

How many tests do we perform in Poland?

If we had to listen to the Harvard scientists and increase the number of tests to 152 per 100. inhabitants, we would have to perform 58 tests a day in our country. We currently make between 10 and 12 of them.

The data as of April 20 show that so far 214 tests have been performed in Poland, and a positive result has been obtained in 236 people. This means that in Poland approx. 9593 percent. performed tests give a positive result.
