Marigolds: growing and care

Varieties

Varieties of marigolds can be divided into three groups according to height: dwarf (20–25 cm), medium tall (30–40 cm), tall and giant (45–60 cm).

Dwarfish

The dwarf version of marigolds was bred by florists not so long ago, but has already won recognition around the world. They make up bouquets and flower “carpets” in the flower beds.

The most popular varieties of dwarf plants:

  1. Baby. They fully justify their name: the rejected marigolds of this variety do not grow above 20 cm, and the diameter of double reed flowers is 5 cm. The Malysh series of varieties is presented in various colors – from yellow to burgundy.
  2. Cherry bracelet. The flowers have a two-tone color, do not fall apart from long flowering.
  3. Golden head. It immediately stands out among other plants with an unusual contrast: burgundy large petals are located below, and a dense bright yellow head is on top.
  4. Pink chameleon. These rejected marigolds have an interesting property: flowers of different shades can be found on one bush. This happens due to the fact that as they bloom, they change their color – from yellow to cherry.
  5. Red brocade, or Red Devil – annual marigolds of a blood-scarlet hue.
  6. Bonanza. Compact flowers that grow up to 20 cm high. They occupy a leading position in the French market, because these plants bloom early, have a double large head and perfectly tolerate various weather conditions.
  7. Rusty ed. Low branched, rejected marigolds of deep cherry color.
  8. Spray Petit. Already by the name you can understand that these plants are low – up to 25 cm in height. They are drought tolerant chrysanthemum plants.

Middle-aged

Among the medium-sized plants can be distinguished:

  1. Carmen. Usually does not exceed 30 cm, but sometimes there are larger specimens. This variety easily tolerates transplanting, which is why it can often be found on sale as a flowering plant. Marigolds in the middle are yellow, and towards the edges the color smoothly turns into burgundy.
  2. Queen Sophia. Dense bushes of these marigolds have unusual flowers – red with a yellow border.
  3. Scarlet Sofia. Do not confuse them with the Queen Sophia – the variety described above. The marigold heads are burgundy with an orange center. They like a little shade.
  4. Orange flame. They look like chrysanthemums. The bush is very dense, the flowers are bright orange.
  5. Bonita bolero. Despite the small size of the inflorescences, these marigolds look advantageous because of the double spreading spotted petals, painted in yellow and red shades.
  6. Durango mandarin. These plants belong to the anemone species. They are derived from rejected, but have a center of tubular flowers, framed by petals. Grow up to 30-35 cm in height and have a bright rich tangerine color.
  7. Red cherry. A compact plant, the bush of which is dotted with red-brown flowers. In the middle is a yellow tubular inflorescence.
  8. Blonde strawberry. It translates into as Strawberry Blonde. In the manner of flowering, these marigolds are similar to the Pink Chameleon variety – over time, the heads change color. This is especially noticeable in cold weather, when the flowers bloom more slowly, and one bush is full of a mixture of several flowers. However, the inflorescences are small – 2-3 cm in diameter.
  9. Playful Marietta – grows in chic wide bushes 30-40 cm high. The flowers are non-double, flat, bicolor – golden with a red center.

Tall and giants

Prominent representatives of this species are:

  1. Fireball. Also found in the version of the Fireball. In length, this variety can reach 70 cm, which makes such marigolds real giants among other flowers. However, their inflorescences are small – 4-5 cm in diameter. Usually these marigolds are rich red, with a whitish bloom.
  2. Cheerful clown. The plant has a striped yellow-red color and looks beautiful in bouquets.

Cultivation and care rules

Marigolds are unpretentious plants, which is why their seeds can be planted in early spring.

Seeds are soaked in water for 10 minutes before planting, then placed in soil of any quality to a depth of 25–30 mm, at a distance of 50–70 mm from each other. You can plant marigolds in open ground in early spring, with the advent of heat. Growth will begin in a week.

If you live in a cold region, we recommend that you germinate the flowers at home or in a greenhouse, and only move them outdoors when the ground warms up.

Try to place flowerbeds with marigolds on the sunny or slightly darkened side, as these plants are sun-loving. You need to water the flowers often and plentifully, but overflow should not be allowed, otherwise the marigolds will begin to rot.

Once a week, the top layer of soil must be carefully loosened.

How to use in landscape

Marigolds are great for creating flower beds. With their warm, vibrant colors, they are often paired with blue or purple plants for a great contrast. It is necessary to take into account the size of the plants and select them in height so that the tall ones do not cover the short ones.

Reviews

If you go through various forums for flower lovers, you can find many interesting positive reviews about rejected marigolds:

Nastya, 31 years old (Yaroslavl): “I love the color red, which is why the balcony is planted with the Red Devil variety! Very unpretentious and beautiful bushes, even if I forget to water, they do not crumble and continue to bloom.

Oksana, 24 years old (Pemza): “As a child, I loved to help my mother in the garden, now I also teach my daughter. We really like the variety Strawberry Blonde: it is interesting to watch the flowering. According to the description, I also liked the Merry Clown, let’s try it.

Take the time to grow marigolds, and they will delight you from early spring until autumn.
