Reflux number: definition, calculation and example

What is this?

The quality of the alcohols is affected by the separating power of the column. This ability, or the ratio of return to the selected alcohol, is commonly called the reflux ratio.

How does it work?

Alcohol vapor rises from the column into the reflux condenser, condenses, and completely turns into a distillate. Part of the fractions is taken to the refrigerator, and part is returned back in the form of reflux.

How to calculate the reflux number?

The number is denoted by “f” and is calculated using the following formulas:

  1. Mp = W / R, where Mp is the mass flow rate of alcohol, W is the power, R is the amount of substance returned to the column

  2. Mp = Md = R + E, where E is the extraction rate, Md is the mass of alcohol distillate

  3. f = R / E

  4. Alcohol = 857 kJ / kg
