Red Scarlet Potatoes
Red Scarlet potatoes are a Dutch variety popular with summer residents and farmers. The name of the variety translates as red-pink, it really blooms with red-purple flowers, and the potato grows with a pink skin. This interesting variety can be planted 2 times a year and harvested 2 times. The harvested tubers are smooth, medium in size, very tasty, they are well stored until spring.
Description of the potato variety “Red Scarlet”
Red Scarlet is one of the best Dutch varieties. In terms of yield, it surpasses many domestic varieties. Bushes of 7 or 8 stems grow up to 70 cm in height. Green leaves have slightly wavy edges.
On one bush, up to 20 oblong pink tubers with small eyes are tied. The pulp is creamy, tasty, does not disintegrate during cooking, the starch content in it is up to 16%. The weight of one tuber is about 80 grams
One hundred square meters can be harvested about 300 kilograms of crops. It ripens at the end of August and keeps well until spring. The variety is resistant to many fungal diseases, cancer, leaf rolling.
To get a good harvest, Dutch potatoes need to be cared for properly. Light, well-drained soils are best suited for planting. It is advisable to add to the site where potatoes will grow in spring, rotted organic matter for digging.
Before planting, the tubers are kept for a month in a cool, bright room. This technique allows you to get strong potato bushes and increase the yield.
Thanks to the fast ripening period of 70 or 80 days, Red Scarlet potatoes can be planted twice, at the beginning and at the end of May. The row spacing is made about 70 cm, tubers in a row are placed at a distance of 30 or 40 cm
The variety does not tolerate drought well and needs watering. In dry weather, the bushes are watered until buds appear, during flowering and a week after flowering.
During the growing season, potatoes are weeded, spud, treated with fungicides and insecticides. Before hilling, it is advisable to feed the bushes with complex mineral fertilizers.
The fight against harmful insects and fungal diseases in small areas can be carried out using folk methods, since potatoes are resistant to scab and phytophthora.
Potato variety “Red Scarlet” is attractive for its yield, early ripening, good taste. It is worth putting in a little care to get a good harvest in August.
